Eric Carle was born in Syracuse, New York. When Eric Carle was six years old he moved to Germany with his parents. Eric grew up there and graduated form Akademie der bildenden Künste, a prestigious art school. In 1952, he moved back to New York and found a job as a graphic designer.The first book Eric Carle illustrated was “Brown Bear Brown Bear, What do you See?” written by Bill Martin Jr. The first book Eric Carle wrote was 1,2,3 to the Zoo and followed by The Very Hungry Caterpillar.Eric Carle has won many awards but here are a few,Officer’s Cross of the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany, 2001Silver Medal from the City of Milano, Italy, 1989Kurt Vonnegut Jr. Literature Award presented by the Indianapolis-Marion County Public Library, 2008Honorary Degree from Bates College, Lewiston, ME, 2007
