Background

WITS RADIO DAYS 2015 | GROWING THE AFRICAN LANGUAGE WEB

SABC News

provides bulletins and current affairs content for all SABC radio, TV and digital platforms

The Eastern Cape news teams produce content for all SABC radio , TV and digital services; as well as national news and current affairs content in isiXhosa for the

Umhlobo

Wenene

radio station

Pilot project: African languages on the web:

The team now also contributes to the

SABC’s isiXhosa social media and multimedia services

, in conjunction with the SABC’s other

isXhosa

production hub: the TV team responsible for isiXhosa news on SABC 1

Collaboration between radio and TV: Umhlobo Wenene is 7 day radio and provides

continuous updates

(vs TV with increased updates around their bulletins every second day)Slide4

Radio has been transformed by social media

It is no longer just about the traditional broadcast approach

Listeners have access to an increasing amount of content: News, information and entertainment in different platforms and formats competing with radio. We have to cater for a non-traditional, non-passive audience: a new emerging audience that is independent and participative. An integrated approach is required.

Radio and social media

Interaction and engagement

with listeners beyond traditional radio (in vernacular which is rare on social media)Converging radio with social media keeps it

relevant: social media give listeners more ways to interact with radio content, beyond the traditional call-ins and sms optionsWe want our listeners to be in touch with our brand (and if they are in touch with our brand online - we believe turning on the radio is just one click away)

Convert our Facebook friends and Twitter followers to radio listeners

(could be online or traditional radio)

This pilot project has changed the traditional radio bulletin production workflow in the following ways:

No longer just about normal news production: Field reporters and desk producers need to now include planning and execution of social media

Priorities and duties had to be reallocatedTeam was strengthened with training (with the goal of having everyone versed in online production)Greater collaboration with TV IsiXhosa desk: Audience gets content from both platforms in

shared spaces for live isiXhosa news (SABC iindaba Facebook page and Twitter account)
