Life at the turn of the 20th Century. African Americans led the fight against voting restrictions and Jim crow laws. As Americans had more time for leisure activities , a modern mass culture emerged.

Voting Restrictions Poll Tax An annual tax that had to be paid before qualifying to vote. Grandfather Clause Even if a man failed the literacy test or couldn’t afford the poll tax, he was still able to vote if he, his father, or his grandfather could vote before Jan. 1, 1867.
