In the mid 1600s a religious group called the Separatists tried to separate from the church of England.. . Religious Freedom. Not only did the Separatist groups, like the Pilgrims, break way from the Church of England, they wanted religious freedom.. 1620. The Mayflower Ship. The Mayflower ship was captained and owned by Christopher Jones.. Jones was hired by the Pilgrims to take them to the New World – they were trying to get to Virginia..
