History
Founded in 421 A.D. by mainlanders fleeing barbarians after the fall of the Roman Empire. It was a perfect place to flee because their enemies lacked knowledge of the sea and ships. They called their land the Venetian Republic.
T
he geographical isolation of these early Venetians enabled them to enjoy an independence from the successive upheavals by which Italy was now being shaken. As time went by more and more people fled to the Venetian Republic.
Throughout time the city continued to grow because of trade. The merchants of Venice were the driving force behind the development and success of Venice during its early history and the city flourished to be one of the world’s longest lasting republic. Slide3
The republic didn’t last forever….
After decades of being a major trading empire, Venice’s decline began in 1453, when Constantinople fell to the Ottoman Turks, whose expansion would threaten, and successfully seize, many of Venice’s eastern lands. -Other powers secured Atlantic and African trade routes as well
The Venetian Republic came to an end in 1797, when Napoleon’s French army forced the city to agree to a new, pro-French, ‘democratic’ government. The city was then Austrian for awhile after signing a peace treaty with Napoleon.
There was brief independence in 1848-9 for Venice but eventually a revolution ousted in Austria and Venice became part of the new Kingdom of Italy, where it remains to this day.

Piazza San Marco
Located in the San Marco district and is dominated by 2 of the most important buildings in Venice– The Basilica San Marco and the Doge’s Palace.
The square is bordered by elegant buildings ,houses, elegant boutiques and open air cafes on the ground floor.
Another beauty is the Torre
dell’Orologio
which is a clock tower on the north side of the piazza and The Campanile is the bell tower of San Marco Square.Slide6

The Bridge of Sighs
This famous bridge was built at the beginning of the 17
th
century and
spans the Rio di Palazzo (Palace River)
The bridge was intended to connect the Old Prison and interrogation rooms in the Doge's Palace
to the New Prison
Rumors as to how the bridge got it’s name:
The prisoners would "sigh" as they crossed the bridge to get executed back in the day
If a couple kisses under the bridge while drifting below on a gondola at sunset, they will enjoy eternal love. Thus, the "sighs" are said to come from lovers who are overwhelmed by the romance of the whole scene.Slide8

By Train:Stazione Santa Maria Novella (Florence) to Santa Lucia (Venice) Open from 6am-Midnight
Italian high-speed trains make the trip in about two hours but is more expensive
Slower trains take about three hours at half the cost
