VOE EXHAUST INSTALLATION TECHNICAL 24 MUSCLECARENTHUSIAST LOUD AND PROUD In 1970, only a handful of GTOs were equipped with Vacuum Operated Exhaust. Now you can have VOE for your musclecarTEX AND PHOOGRAPHY BY AUL ZAARINE The commercial depicted a Palladium Silver 1970 GTO cruising through the Big Boys parking lot on Woodward Avenue. As the young driver idles in, he reaches down under the dash and pulls a knob next to the Ram Air control knob. That caused the exhaust to grow louder and grab the attention of the kids parked in their musclecars. To their collective awe and amazement, as the GTO rolls past, the driver stabs the Ram Air 400s throttle with its unruffled rumpity rump exhaust. After completing his lap of the parking lot, the driver pushes in the knob, the car quiets down, and he eases the GTO out into Woodwards onrushing traffic as the voiceover said, This is the way its gonna be, baby. That commercial promoted a whole lot more than the GTOs image. It also publicized the UPC W73/Option Order Code 611 Exhaust System, Driver Controlled, also known as VOE or Vacuum Operated Exhaust. VOE had been a favorite of Pontiac General Manager John DeLorean (he called it the Tiger Button). The idea was to open up the mufflers, release the backpressure and increase the exhaust note. Pulling the dash-mounted switch allowed vacuum stored in a reservoir to open an actuator on each muffler, rerouting the exhaust out the muffler for a special performance mode as Pontiac called it. The normal mode was essentially the same tone as the standard GTO exhaust, but pull the Exhaust Mode knob and the muffler return tubes were bypassed, which Pontiac was quick to add was for off- road use only. Yeah, right. GM immediately pulled the commercial, admonishing Pontiac that they were blatantly promoting street racing. Well, yeah thats what it was supposed to do. Even the name Humbler rubbed GM brass the wrong way. GM was trying to deal with a federal government that was more stringent than ever about emissions and safety, and heres maverick division Pontiac on TV during the Super Bowl encouraging competitive driving. Not only was the commercial axed, but GM also instructed Pontiac to delete the VOE from the option books as well. Only 233 were built before the VOE was silenced. Few survive today, making it one of the most rare and unique of all GTO options. Thanks to Waldrons Antique Exhaust in Nottawa, Michigan, the voice of the GTOs VOE has returned to the street. Not only have they reproduced the VOE in stainless steel for any GTO, Waldrons now offers a dualmode Driver Controlled Exhaust (DCE) system that can be fitted to virtually any musclecar, street machine or street rod and sounds just as sweet. The DCE incorporates a valve that, when activated, changes the exhaust gas flow path inside the muffler between Quiet and Open modes.
