Making a “Killing”
No cash flow.
A sad situation for us.
Dr. Ellen Millsaps, patron saint of the C-N Book Fair
In Dr. Millsaps’ benevolent regime, we relied primarily
on Scholastic book fairs as
We followed in her footsteps
after she retired.
That changed in 2010.
Excellent organization, but their policies
changed gradually in ways that affected our profits.
So, we desperately sought replacement fundraisers.
Students press humorous
charges against each other.
Alpha Chi “bailiffs” come arrest
the target and take them to jail in theactivity center. They could pay a fine to get out of jail by matching the donation of the
original student placing the charges.
Everyone hated it.
Other groups had similar fundraisers.
Similar idea to Jail-a-thon: Students
make donation to have a stuffedmonkey with Velcro arms attached to target.
Targets required to wear the monkey aroundcampus until they raise matching donations.Once they raise the funds, they can select a
new monkey-recipient.Two problems?
Everyone hated it (again).
Monkeys mysteriously ended up in trash
Brainstorming Session I
What does not work? Why?
(We’ll brainstorm fundraisers that did work well in a bit….)
Survey of Students….
Our answer to that?
They didn’t want objects, food, or knick-knacks.
They wanted memorable experiences.
They wanted something they could dowith their friends.
They wanted their “money’s worth” in
terms of time spent having fun.
The Mastermind Fundraiser
We would give our students an on-going,
They would get a chance to play spy.
They would get a chance to hunt (and
be hunted by) their friends.
They would be “Mastermind Spies!”
“An action-packed spy game of outsmarting other players.”
What you need….
Bulk ping pong balls
Cheap squirt guns
Emily Phillips, C-N’s version of Kim Possible, models her stylish weapon.
Add poison traps….
and clever bomb cards….
Finally, secret AX codes….
This card prevents cheating
You take all these items….
The ping pong balls are now officially Alpha Chi “death globes.”
And put them in Top Secret
spy packets for players. You sell top secret packets.
($5.00 each, i.e. $4.50 profit.)
:1. Sign up players.
2. Record their secret code numbers and email info.
3. Your AX officers email each player the names of two targets on campus to “assassinate.”
4. The player chooses a means to dispatch victims and tracks them down or lays traps for them.
Ah, the thrill of the hunt!
4. Players who “die” give their assassins their secret code number. The assassins e-mail “Alpha Chi Intelligence” that number to confirm the kill.
5. Then, you assign the player a new target.
6. This continues until the last two players left must hunt each other. The last one standing wins!
Your mission, should you choose to accept it….
Tips & Pitfalls: You must advertise widely.
More Tips & Pitfalls:
Security and Safety
Talk with campus security and coordinate with them.
Never use any game props that could be mistaken for a real weapon.Have students sign consent forms.
Rules should include “safe-zones” to avoid disrupting campus.
Brainstorming Session II
Other great fundraisers?
(What has worked really well at your chapter?
