Theatre Event Title eg: Life of PI Theatre The Hermetic Marriage at Pentameters Theatre Butterfly Wheel in The Hermetic Marriage Published: 20 March, 2014 PHOEBE SMITH PENTAMETERS Theatre has a time machine residing at the top of its stairs in the form of psychedelic show The Hermetic Marriage . The audience is magicked back into 1967 and it is all rather lovely. It even smelt li ke 1967. This multi-sensory experience is written, performed and created by young female duo, Butterfly Wheel aka Alice Ancient and Moon Child. Ancient s hauntingly brilliant voice brings to mind Grace Slick from Jefferson Airpla ne and Niko from the Velvet Underground. The talented pair are joined by a group of performers and a live band that pack 75 minutes with mime, dance, video, spoken word and song. The loose narrative jumps through time to explore symbolism and lessons from folklore, alchemy and mysticism. A wide knowledge of ancient philosophies is not required. Many will recognise certain set pieces: Horus measuring the weight of a heart against that of a feather or temptation in the garden of Eden. The lack of space is the only downside, resulting in an awkward use of props and dancers not being able to give full expression to their leaps and jumps something they will no doubt remedy as they tour European festivals this year. Leave your expectations at the door and you will be rewarded with an evening of aural and visual delights. Recommended.
