Rising Sea Levels – The Maldives
The
World’s lowest lying nation – the highest point is only 1.3 metres above sea levelA rise of 1 metre would make the islands uninhabitableSince the 1950s, sea levels have increased 0.8-1.6 millimetres per year – how much has the sea risen since 1950? At current rates, nearly the whole of the country will be under water by 2085.

Explaining in detail (AF4)
Impact of Sea Level Rise
In groups, create a spider diagram of impacts of sea level rise.
Displayed around the room are impacts with evidence.
Add these to the spider diagram.
Using the ‘explain in detail’ structure – explain the impacts, try to develop your points with a consequence of the impact.
Peer assess each others answers and provide feedback to improve.

EXPLANATIONS WILL INCLUDE DATA AND PLACE NAMES!

Empathy…
Imagine you are this man living in the Maldives and you’ve been warned of the country’s future.
What impact will it have on you? What will you do to respond to the situation?Slide5
Tourism
is the largest industry in the Maldives, attracting 600,000 people every year and accounts for 28% of the country’s income.
Damage to tourist infrastructure due to rising sea levels will devastate the economy. E.g. the international airport is the only entry point into the country by air. Any damage to it will cause an extreme loss.Slide6
People are having to move (migrate) to either higher ground or will become
environmental refugees in other countries such as India and Sri Lanka. Becoming environmental refugees will affect the culture and community of the Maldives.Slide7
The UN's environmental panel has warned that, at current rates, sea level would be high enough to make the Maldives
uninhabitable by 2100. The oceans are rising by 9mm per year, meaning the islanders may have to abandon their homes before the end of the century. Slide8
Coral reef habitats are damaged
by warmer sea temperatures and rising sea levels. Slide9
One local who has been living by the sea for generations named, Maria
Passi said "at night I can't sleep if the tide is high," because she is no longer comfortable living by the sea after her house was flooded one night. Her husband Ron remembers the night. "There was water everywhere, and rubbish floating around, and coconuts under the bed." Maria added: "When I saw how it looked, I just sat down and cried."
