Scheme of Redemption - Introduction

An overview of the Bible, from Genesis to RevelationThe high-level master plan of God for all of mankindWhile we will be looking at various portions of Biblical history and stories, this will not be an in-depth study of these times

3Slide4

Scheme of Redemption - Introduction

The goal will be for us to learn how God moved from man's problem of sin to His solution of Jesus on the crossWe will see and learn how everything in the scriptures relates to, and points to, Jesus and the cross (story of Ruth, story of Esther, etc)We will also see how everything in the Bible reveals God to mankind. Who He is and what He is likeHow can this understanding of the Bible help us?Helps us to learn more about God and who He isHelps us to learn more about His plan for mankind, and His desire to have an intimate relationship with

us

Scheme of Redemption - Introduction

"Redemption" - What does it mean to "redeem" something?"Gain or regain possession of (something) in exchange for payment" (Oxford Dictionaries)All of mankind was created by God and therefore all of mankind belongs to Him. How is it that we became lost and needed to be "bought back" by God?5Slide6

Scheme of Redemption - Introduction

Ephesians 2:4-9 - But God, being rich in mercy, because of His great love with which He loved us, 5 even when we were dead in our transgressions, made us alive together with Christ (by grace you have been saved), 6 and raised us up with Him, and seated us with Him in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus, 7 so that in the ages to come He might show the surpassing riches of His grace in kindness toward us in Christ Jesus. 8 For by grace you have been saved through faith; and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God; 9 not as a result of works, so that no one may boast.According to this passage, what is it that signifies being lost or not?Life and death - death being a separation from God and life being with God

Scheme of Redemption - Introduction

What were Adam and Eve told would happen if they disobeyed? They would surely dieWhen we're talking about being redeemed, we are discussing:Having our spiritual life restored to usBeing restored to the relationship we once had with GodBeing made right with God; justified (“just if I’d never done it”)

The Bible - A love letter from God

If you were writing a long letter to a person of interest, that had never met you before, but you desired for them to know you on an intimate level:How would you start it off? What would you include in the letter?8Slide9

The Bible - A love letter from God

The Bible is a (really really long) love letter from GodGod begins His letter by telling us about how it all began ("In the beginning God...")He moves on to tell the story of the fall of mankindHe makes known His plan, puts it into action and tells us about all He went through to accomplish His planThe letter then ends with Him pronouncing His unconditional love for us, describing His desire to have an intimate relationship with us, and making INCREDIBLE promises to us!

"Scheme" of Redemption?

Why is it a "scheme" of redemption??Definition of "scheme" (Merriam-Webster)1a: archaic (1): a mathematical or astronomical diagram (2): a representation of the astrological aspects of the planets at a particular time1b: a graphic sketch or outline2: a concise statement or table3: a plan or program of action; especially a crafty or secret one4: a systematic or organized configuration; a design (color scheme)10Slide11

"Scheme" of Redemption?

Indeed, the scheme of redemption is a crafty and a somewhat secretive planI Corithians 2:6-8 - 6 Yet we do speak wisdom among those who are mature; a wisdom, however, not of this age nor of the rulers of this age, who are passing away; 7 but we speak God’s wisdom in a mystery, the hidden wisdom which God predestined before the ages to our glory; 8 the wisdom which none of the rulers of this age has understood; for if they had understood it they would not have crucified the Lord of glory

11Slide12

"Scheme" of Redemption?

Ephesians 1:7-12 - 7 In Him we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of His grace 8 which He lavished on us. In all wisdom and insight 9 He made known to us the mystery of His will, according to His kind intention which He purposed in Him 10 with a view to an administration suitable to the fullness of the times, that is, the summing up of all things in Christ, things in the heavens and things on the earth. In Him 11 also we have obtained an inheritance, having been predestined according to His purpose who works all things after the counsel of His will, 12 to the end that we who were the first to hope in Christ would be to the praise of His glory.

12Slide13

"Scheme" of Redemption?

Ephesians 3:4-5 - 4 By referring to this, when you read you can understand my insight into the mystery of Christ, 5 which in other generations was not made known to the sons of men, as it has now been revealed to His holy apostles and prophets in the Spirit;Ephesians 3:8-12 - 8 To me, the very least of all saints, this grace was given, to preach to the Gentiles the unfathomable riches of Christ, 9 and to bring to light what is the administration of the mystery which for ages has been hidden in God who created all things; 10 so that the manifold wisdom of God might now be made known through the church to the rulers and the authorities in the heavenly places. 11 This was in accordance with the eternal purpose which He carried out in Christ Jesus our Lord, 12 in whom we have boldness and confident access through faith in Him.

13Slide14

"Scheme" of Redemption?

1 Peter 1:10-12 - 10 As to this salvation, the prophets who prophesied of the grace that would come to you made careful searches and inquiries, 11 seeking to know what person or time the Spirit of Christ within them was indicating as He predicted the sufferings of Christ and the glories to follow. 12 It was revealed to them that they were not serving themselves, but you, in these things which now have been announced to you through those who preached the gospel to you by the Holy Spirit sent from heaven; things into which angels long to look14Slide15

Planned from the foundation of the world

When sin entered the lives of men, God was not put in a dilemmaThe plan to redeem mankind, through His Son on the cross, was planned and ordained before the first "let there be" was ever spokenMatthew 13:34-35 - 34 All these things Jesus spoke to the crowds in parables, and He did not speak to them without a parable. 35 This was to fulfill what was spoken through the prophet: "I will open My mouth in parables; I will utter things hidden since the foundation of the world"15Slide16

Planned from the foundation of the world

Ephesians 1:3-4 - 3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places in Christ, 4 just as He chose us in Him before the foundation of the world, that we would be holy and blameless before Him.“Just as He chose us in Him…” – Do we really realize the impact of this statement??16Slide17

Planned from the foundation of the world

1 Peter 1:20-21 - 20 For He was foreknown before the foundation of the world, but has appeared in these last times for the sake of you 21 who through Him are believers in God, who raised Him from the dead and gave Him glory, so that your faith and hope are in God.17Slide18

Why??

Why would God do this??Some ideas:God is a social being and He desired an object to express His great love toA loving relationship is reciprocal. A relationship can only exist between two willing partiesGod is love, and His love is indeed unconditionalPerhaps it's all about the story and being a part of it?

18Slide19

The grace of God

What does grace mean?“Unmerited favor”Getting that which I do not deserveWhen did God’s grace come into play? The grace of God is displayed in Genesis 1:1 through the end of Revelation. It did not suddenly come into play when sin entered the world. Adam and Eve enjoyed God’s grace, even prior to the fallHas the word “grace” been misused today?19Slide20

The character of God

There is a tremendous amount of insight that we can gain on God’s character, who He is, from the stories of the BibleCreation – Sovereignty, supreme power, infinite knowledge, wisdom, grace, and loveThe flood of Noah – Holiness and justice, wrath, longsuffering and patience (1 Peter 3:20), graceWith every story of the Bible, there is something there to learn about God, who He is, and what it means to be “godly”20Slide21
