Smoking Areas on campus
Our goal was to survey our peers in order to discover the effects of the recently implemented smoking ban on campus
We wanted to learn through our survey if creating designated smoking areas on campus was something the students would supportSlide3
Our position
We believe that it is unjust to have our smoking privileges unremittingly revoked
We believe that there should be designated smoking areas on campus
We wanted to know if our peers agreedSlide4
Whom we polled
We surveyed 20 people
All 20 were students at ASU
19 of those surveyed are between the ages of 18 and 22Slide5
Breaking Down the Survey
We asked twelve questions
Five questions dealt with demographics
We asked if the respondent identified as a smoker
We asked if they agreed with the ban
We asked if they would support smoking areas on campus
We asked where they thought these smoking areas should be
The objective of our survey was to discover how students felt about the recent ban on smoking. We also wanted to know who identified as a smoker and who agreed with establishing designated smoking areas.Slide6
Breaking Down the DemographicsSlide7
Breaking down the resultsSlide8
Who agreed with the ban?
Smoker
Nobody identified as a regular smoker.
Occasional Smoker
Of those who identified as an occasional smoker, only 2 said they did not agree with the ban, the other 4 said that they were supportive of the ban.
Non-Smoker
Of those who identified as a non-smoker, 3 said they did not agree with the ban, 7 said they were supportive of the ban, and 1 said they did not care either way.Slide9
Would you support implementing smoking areas?
When asked if they would support smoking areas, only 5 people in the class said no.
10 people said that they would support these areas.
The other 5 said they were either indifferent or mildly supportive.Slide10
Where should these areas be?Slide11
Has the ban made a difference?
6 out of 20 participants claim the ban has made no difference and smoking is still present on campus
11 out of 20 participants say they still see smoking on campus, but it has decreased
Only 3 participants say there is no longer the presence of smoking on campusSlide12
So now what………Slide13
Conclusion
the data was ambiguous. The results of our survey show no true correlation between those who smoke and those who agree with the ban. The majority of those surveyed did say they would agree with the implementation of smoking zones on campus. To most respondents, there appears to be no remarkable decline in the number of smokers seen on campus. Therefore we argue that installing designated smoking areas would be beneficial to the campus. Not only would it provide those who smoke a place for repose, but it would also reduce the number of people smoking in commonly trafficked areas because they would have a place to go.
