Network

Personal Area Network (PAN) – within a home

Local Area Network (LAN) or Wireless Local Area Network (WLAN) – network or wireless network within a small area such as a building or group of buildings

Internet & world wide web

INTERNET

Inter

net

work of computer networks – global

began in 1969 as a government project

The World Wide Web

invented in 1989 by Tim Berners Lee who wanted to share information with colleagues at CERN (Particle Physics Laboratory) in Switzerland

1990 – established the three fundamental technologies for web:

HTML

: HyperText Markup Language.

URL/URI

: Uniform Resource Locator/ Uniform Resource Identifier

HTTP

: Hypertext Transfer ProtocolSlide8

Web browsers

software used to access world wide web

common browsers: Chrome, Internet Explorer, Firefox, Safari, Opera, Edge

features of a browser

graphical user interface (GUI)

navigation – address bar, links, navigation buttons, search box

Bookmarks

browsing history

tabbed browsing – allows you to have several sites open – right-clicking on a link produces a shortcut menu that provides options for opening the link

downloading files – to your computer – right-click link for shortcut menu

plug-ins – programs installed in browser that enables it to work with a variety of file types Slide11

SEARCH ENGINES

specialized websites that help you to find what you are looking for

do this by entering one or more keywords

sample engines: Google, Yahoo!, Bing

there is A LOT of information on the web, so the more specific you can be with your search, the better the chance that you will get to a location that will give you the information you are looking for

to improve searches:

consider taking the suggestions offered by the search engine

search for

phrases

(you do this by placing quotes around the words) – i.e. “basketball hoops” for sale

you can also exclude terms with the minus sign – i.e. recipes for potato –salad

use the word

OR

in the search – i.e. lessons on laptops OR tablets

Google Scholar for research or Google News for latest events

you can perform specialized searches for images, videos, maps, etcSlide13

INTERNET ETHICS

Do NOT harm

Do NOT steal

Do NOT access files without owner’s permission

Do NOT infringe on copyrights (this is probably the BIGGEST problem)

Respect privacy of others

Report illegal communications and activities to ISP or law enforcement

Keep user IDs and passwords secure

Do NOT retrieve, view or modify information of others without permission

Be honest, sensitive and respect the rights of others
