Learning to Recognizing God’s loving Presence in the world (and in our lives). Sacramental Awareness

What is Sacramental Awareness? A special appreciation of the sacred in the world. Sacred-the holy, that which is of God. The Catholic faith teaches us to see the world and everything in as sacred—filled with God. It requires that we learn to Look and Listen for God in the world with spiritual eyes and ears (our hearts). It also begins with an attitude of wonder (Mysterion--Mystery).

What is Sacramental Awareness? God communicates with us through people, places, actions, events and experiences that shape a person’s life. God is present in and communicates with us through all of creation Second sacramental principle: What is it? Key distinction: This does not mean that God is identical with creation. God transcends creation! He is beyond it as the loving source of it all.

Example of George Washington Carver Who was he? “His research at the [Tuskegee] institute resulted in the creation of more than 300 products from peanuts -- products like cooking oil, paint and, yes, peanut butter. In addition, he created more than 100 products from sweet potatoes. Carver is also responsible for inventing synthetic materials, such as marble and plywood. He even invented the dye which is still used in Crayola Crayons. Also a talented artist , Carver created some of his own art paints using local clays .”

George Washington Carver He asked God to reveal to him the secrets of the universe," Tuskegee University's Frank J. Toland said. "God's response to him was that his mind was too small to perceive that." To that Carver replied, "Then teach me the mysteries of the peanut .“ https://www.cbn.com/cbnnews/us/2010/February/George-Washington-Carver-Master-Inventor-Artist/

Sacramental Dullness/Blindness The inability to perceive the sacred in our lives or in the world. There are multiple reasons for this; such as: People are busy- preoccupied with daily routines of life that they can’t see or hear the signs and signals that God is using in their speak into their lives (our lives). A great deal of pain and suffering exist in the world (and in their lives)- Many people become overwhelmed by all the problems facing them personally and in the world. Examples?

Sacramental Dullness When this occurs our vision of life becomes dominated by gloom and pessimism. We struggle to see how God could be present in this world.

We don’t know where or what to look for? -We don’t know how to see or listen with spiritual eyes and ears (with our hearts). How often do we not recognize something that maybe right in front of us. We may need others to tell us. We may be expecting whatever we are searching for to look different or even find it in another place.

The Antidote The Antidote to Sacramental Dullness is learning to see the sacred in our life and in the world. A Christian perspective gives us a deeper look at reality *The Christian vision of life is: that God created us and the entire world out of love and that is what makes creation-all of life-sacred (the example of Genesis 1). Understanding this opens the world to us in a whole new way. It opens God to us in a whole new way.

Grace: God’s Loving Presence in the World. Grace-The creative, sustaining and transforming self-gift of God that is always offered to us. Another way of saying that all of creation is sacred is to say that all of creation is graced. God’s grace is present in and through all of creation. Creation is more than nature, creation is also us. God speaks to us through others. God’s speaks through human gestures and movements. God speaks through friendship.

Listening for God: Developing Sacramental skills Learning to respond to God is necessary for sacramental awareness. Listening for God is not simply the ability to hear. It also involves the ability to receive. Listening involves us opening ourselves up to God

Some key points about how God speaks us. God wants to speak to our pain in life. No one is exempt from pain in this life. If we learn to listen for God. God will speak to our pain. God wants us to heal. God always speaks the truth in love. Truth is not really truth unless it is spoken in love. God will always speak with love. It is not always comfortable, God will lovingly challenges us. God shares with us our gifts and callings. God loves to reveal us to ourselves!

Literal vs. Symbolic Thinking Communication by way of symbols is based on the human ability to think symbolically. For a variety of reasons, modern Western people often have a hard time thinking symbolically. Story of Pig at the fork in the road When we see things only at their literal level, we endanger our ability to recognize the deeper meanings they can convey to us. We endanger our ability to recognize the sacred

Literal Only Thinking Literal thinking involves considering something only at face value or just being concerned with the “facts.” The attitude behind literal thinking reduces all of life to just the observable, measurable things. Of course, literal thinking is often necessary. Example of airplane. Still there is something very natural, human, and necessary about symbolic thinking. Scriptural Examples : John 3, 4.
