SYNOPSIS Charlie McKenzie (Tori Spelling) is a smart, pretty, ambitio Charlie suddenly finds herself, like many others in the company, trying to keep her job amidst a massive wave of firings. She has a reputation for extreme competence but also for being a bit of a maverick Ð equally lauded and criticized for her non-corporate approach to her work. Will she still have a job after her meeting with new boss Edward Walcott (Greg Germann)? CharlieÕs friend and colleague Stacy (Kali Rocha) makes a suggestion: Given that Walcott takes pride in running Òa family company,Ó Stacy notes that nothing says stability more than a married woman. She offers Charlie her wedding ring and suggests that she pretend to be a happily married woman to win points during her interview with Walcott. Charlie tries the ring on for size, but immediately has second thoughts about trying such a Awkwardly, Charlie feeds him details about a fictitious husband and daughter; sheÕd rather conjure up a harmless white lie than explain why the ring is really on her finger. And it seems to work. Not only does Walcott intend to keep Charlie on, but heÕs got big plans fo Having already witnessed Mr. WalcottÕs anger when he was lied to by another employee, Charlie canÕt bring herself to admitting her Against her better judgment, Charlie goes along with the scheme. And before long, she and Stacy are holding auditions in the office of a low-rent Hollywood talent agency for pros Walcott and his wife arrive early for their barbecue get-together. Buck seamlessly shifts into husband mode when he arrives. Everything seems to be going alright; Walcott is buying the act, although Charlie grows more and more frantic as the tapestry of lies continues to grow. Buck, whose ÒcharacterÓ name is Frank, impresses Walcott in every way. On the spot, he invents a fantastic story about how he and Charlie met and fell in love, a story thatÕs ver ÒWelcome to the family,Ó Walcott tells her. But sheÕs not going to get away with her deception quite so effortlessly. It so happens that Walcott is so enamored with CharlieÕs home (or more accurately, the home he thinks is hers) that he decides to temporarily move into the neighboring house, which is vacant and available for lease. With the boss moving in next door while searching for a more permanent residence, Charlie will have to continue with the charade of being a happily married wife and mother. She considers coming clean, but canÕt bring herself to do so when officially promoted to vice president of marketing. Instead, sheÕll have to hire Buck for another, perhaps lengthier gig as her husband, especially since Walcott canÕt wait to g -believe ones that theyÕre concocting for the benefit of her boss. Without warning, thereÕs a new problem. The Walcott home door, executed with one phone call to a Hollywood movie-biz bug-wrangler ex-boyfriend. ItÕs a plan that might have worked, but Buck gallantly volunteers to let Walcott and his wife stay with him and Charlie instead of retreating to a hotel. Now, much to CharlieÕs horror and dismay, their Òhappy familyÓ act is going to subjected to even closer, roun The next morning, chaos is in full bloom, beginning with the arrival of StacyÕs ex-husband, who mistakenly believes that Buck is his wifeÕs new beau. A visit from the bug wrangler doesnÕt help matters any. Charlie keeps trying to think on her feet, concocting plausible explanations, but sheÕs fighting a losing battle. Even WalcottÕs apparent cluelessness has its limits, especially after he spots Buck in a wee-hours TV commercial. He has a new announcement to make: ÒCharlie ... Cleaning out her desk back at the office, Charlie explains all to Walcott. She never meant for everything to spiral out of control the way it did. Not only has she learned her lesson, she tells him, but she also has blown her chances for real romance with Buck. Walcott accepts her apology and re-hires her. ÒYou are solid Walcott material,Ó he tells her, as long as she is through with all the lies. But itÕs still not officially a happy ending until, the next day, as Buck is loading his belongings into a cab that will take him to the airport and an out-of-the-country acting job, Charlie shows up to stop him with a passionate kiss and a heartfelt proposal. It seems that the make-believe romance has led to the real thin
