Storytelling gives birth to new churches in Costa Rica

In

Tell THE Story

, the trainer is a facilitator, not an instructor. He/she tells a Bible story from memory, then immediately asks the group members to retell the story to one another. Next, the trainer tells the story again, making intentional errors, and the group corrects the errors. Everyone then has listened to the story at least three times and is able to engage in these five open-ended questions:

What did you like about the story?

What did you not like about the story?

What hidden truth did you learn from this story?

If you could be any character, who would you be or not be and why?

What truth will you apply in your own life this week?Slide5

Luke 5 (NIV)

One day as Jesus was standing by the Lake of Gennesaret, the people were crowding around him and listening to the word of God. 2

He saw at the water’s edge two boats, left there by the fishermen, who were washing their nets. 3 He got into one of the boats, the one belonging to Simon, and asked him to put out a little from shore. Then he sat down and taught the people from the boat.

4 When he had finished speaking, he said to Simon, “Put out into deep water, and let down the nets for a catch.”

An Odd Order

What are some of the things you remember about Peter? Why do so many people identify with Peter? Why do you think Jesus chose Peter to be his disciple? What was unusual about Jesus instruction to Peter?Slide8

Luke 5 (NIV)

5 Simon answered, “Master, we’ve worked hard all night and haven’t caught anything. But because you say so, I will let down the nets.”6

When they had done so, they caught such a large number of fish that their nets began to break. 7 So they signaled their partners in the other boat to come and help them, and they came and filled both boats so full that they began to sink.Slide9

Obedience School

What do you think would have happened if Peter had ignored Jesus instruction? Why would Jesus test Peter with such a nonsensical command? Is there a lesson for us in this story?

9Slide10

Luke 5 (NIV)

8 When Simon Peter saw this, he fell at Jesus’ knees and said, “Go away from me, Lord; I am a sinful man!” 9 For he and all his companions were astonished at the catch of fish they had taken,

10 and so were James and John, the sons of Zebedee, Simon’s partners. Then Jesus said to Simon, “Don’t be afraid; from now on you will fish for people.”

11 So they pulled their boats up on shore, left everything and followed him.

Wesley’s Guidance

I am a creature of a day, passing through life as an arrow through the air. I am a spirit come from God, and returning to God: Just hovering over the great gulf; till, a few moments hence, I am no more seen; I drop into an unchangeable eternity! I want to know one thing—the way to heaven; how to land safe on that happy shore. God himself has condescended to teach the way: For this very end he came from heaven. He [has] written it down in a book. O give me that book! At any price, give me the book of God! I have it: Here is knowledge enough for me. Let me be homo

unius libri

[that is, a person, comparatively speaking, of one book].

13Slide14

Wesley’s Guidance

Here then I am, far from the busy ways of [life]. I sit down alone: Only God is here. In his presence I open, I read his book, for this end, to find the way to heaven. Is there a doubt concerning the meaning of what I read? Does anything appear dark or intricate? I lift up my heart to the Father of Lights: —“Lord, is it not [your] word, ‘If any . . . lack wisdom, let [them] ask of God?’ [You ‘give . . . liberally and ungrudgingly.’ You have said, ‘If any are willing to do your will, they shall know it.’] I am willing to do, let me know, [your] will

14Slide15

Wesley’s Guidance

” I then search after and consider parallel passages of Scripture, “comparing spiritual things with spiritual.” I meditate [upon these] with all the attention and earnestness of which my mind is capable. If any doubt still remains, I consult those who are experienced in the things of God; and then the writings whereby, being dead, they yet speak. And what I thus learn, that I [do and] teach (Wesley’s Works, Vol. 5).
