Today’s Question: Do you know who were the First Five Presidents? How did these First Five shape the office of president?

Activities: Overview: First Five Presidents 5 minute break In groups: read biographies and fill out chart of most important events during each presidency Create Presidential Headstones

Washington: The Great Leader

George Washington’s Farwell address: “You have the same religion, manners, and political principles, but…Let me…warn you in the most solemn manner against the baneful [evil] effects of the spirit of party…It agitates the community with ill-founded jealousies and false alarms; kindles the animosity of one part against another; foments [stirs up]…riot and insurrection [rebellion].” What did Washington say? What was he trying to warn the country about?

If fighting between the parties was not controlled, it could tear the young nation apart…
