Slide2The James Webb Telescope
The James Webb Telescope will be a large infrared telescope with a 6.5 meter primary mirror. The telescope will be launched on an Ariane 5 rocket from French Guiana in October 2018.The telescope will be the premier observatory of the next decade, serving thousands of astronomers worldwide.
Primary Scientific Goals- First Light
Webb will be a powerful time machine with infrared vision that will peer back over 13.5 billion years to see the first stars and galaxies forming out of the darkness of the early universe.
Slide4-GalaxiesWebb will study the formation and evolution of galaxies.
Slide5Stars and Planetary Systems
Webb will be able to see through and into massive clouds of dust that are opaque to visible light observatories like Hubble.
Slide6Planets & Origins of LifeWebb will look at the atmospheres of
extrasolar planets, and may even find building blocks of life elsewhere in the universe.
Slide7Hubble vs. Webb
Slide8Hubble vs. Webb
Slide9Hubble vs. WebbHubble is located at the L2 point, about one million miles (1.5 million km) from earth.
Slide10James WebbJames Webb was the director of NASA from 1961 to 1968. His tenure included most of the Mercury, Gemini and Apollo missions.
Webb also believed NASA needed to strike a balance between human space flight, and unmanned space exploration. In 1965 he supported the idea of creating a large telescope in space.
