APUSH DAY 63 . Feb. 12, 1014. Roosevelt wanted to build a canal in Panama to link the Pacific and Atlantic oceans. French company had acquired the rights to build the canal. In 1902, the U.S. bought the rights from the French Company. Roosevelt was the son of a wealthy Dutch man from New York and a Southern Bell. He was born in 1858 in New York and was a very sickly young boy. He had terrible asthma and needed to be home schooled . The London Conference. Purpose of the conference?. “Organize a coordinated international attack on the global depression.”. Roosevelt withdrew from conference for fear of sacrificing US economy for world economy. Chapter 34 1933-1941. Intro. Americans in the 1930s tried to turn their backs on the world’s problems; the only battle Roosevelt sought was against the great depression.. But as the clouds of war gathered over Europe, Roosevelt eventually concluded that the United States could no longer remain aloof.. Introduction. Nearly 76 million Americans greeted the new century in 1900. Almost one in seven of them were foreign-born. The 20. th. century will bring in ethnically and racially mixed American people than before. These new crusaders will call themselves the Progressives. . Introduction. Americans in the 1930’s . tried to turn their backs on the world problems. Americans had their own burdens to shoulder and the cost of getting involved in foreign problems seemed too great.. His plan gave government jobs to the unemployed and increased government regulation of the economy. Although New Deal programs achieved varied levels of success, they did represent a basic change in American society..
