Freudianism

Description of the mind that emphasizes the major role played by unconscious drives. Reason+Will+passion (Ego+superego+unconscious). Freud believed the “superego” influenced human nature. (Ego-decision making component, seeks pleasure. Superego- learned morals and values).

Marxism

Based on the theories of Karl marx

this school concerns itself with class differences, economic and otherwise, as well as the implications and complications of the capitalist system: "Marxism attempts to reveal the ways in which our socioeconomic system is the ultimate source of our experience" (Tyson 277

).

He is all about power struggle. Rich vs poor. Owners vs workers. Cats vs dogs.

Author’s are advancing their own cause. As a reader, we try to figure out what the author’s cause is and what side they are on through reading their story.

Existentialism

Is a movement that emphasizes individual existence, freedom and Choice. Humans define their own meaning in life and try to make

rational decisions despite existing in an irrational universe. Focuses on the question of human existence and the feeling that there is no purpose or explanation at the core of existence. Believes that there are no transcendent forces. Individuals are entirely free and must take personal responsibility for themselves. Emphasizes: action, freedom, and decision.

Art: mirror of the situation. Emphasizes the uniqueness in a hostile or indifferent universe.

Revolt against realism (the quality or fact of representing a person, thing, or situation accurately or in a way that is true to

life)

and naturalism

(everything arises from natural properties and causes, and supernatural or spiritual explanations are excluded or

discounted).

Characterized by a bizarre distortion of reality.

The

world view is solely from a subjective perspective, distorting it radically for emotional effect in order to evoke moods or ideas.

Surrealism in literature can be defined as an artistic attempt to bridge together reality and the imagination. Surrealists seek to overcome the contradictions of the conscious and unconscious minds by creating unreal or bizarre stories full of juxtapositions
