People were protesting because of segregation in Chicago's schools. The Supreme Court had ruled segregation unconstitutional 12 years before in Brown vs. Board of Education, but Chicago schools were desegregating at a very slow pace. The protest went from city hall to Mayor Richard Daley's house (which was an all white neighborhood). Although the protest was nonviolent, many neighbors to the mayor began to yell and throw things at the protestors.
