With examples pulled exclusively from real-world auditing cases, you\'ll quickly learn how to recognize and understand the critical factors and circumstances that determine the outcome of audits. Studying audits within the text provides you with the information about the true nature of the work environment and work roles of independent auditors. Prepare for the challenging responsibilities in public accounting today as Knapp?s CONTEMPORARY AUDITING, 12E exposes you to a variety of high-risk audits. Numerous high-profile and current cases teach you to recognize red flags common in accounting fraud, including missing documents, porous or nonexistent internal controls and implausible relationships between key financial statement items and financial data that are literally too good to be true. You also examine the most common causes of failures in independent audits: client personnel who intentionally subvert an audit or auditors who fail to follow professional responsibilities. This edition discusses and dissects challenging circumstances that arise in audits to prepare you to handle problematic situations in your own career. You acquire an understanding of auditing standards, audit procedures and ethical principles related to independent auditing that can translate to improved performance on the CPA exam and even career success. As auditors, we are trained to investigate beyond appearances to determine the underlying facts--in other words, to look beneath the surface. From the Enron and WorldCom scandals of the early 2000s to the financial crisis of 2007-2008 to present-day issues and challenges related to significant estimation uncertainty, understanding the auditor\'s responsibility related to fraud, maintaining a clear perspective, probing for details, and understanding the big picture are indispensable to effective auditing. With the availability of greater levels of qualitative and quantitative information (big data), the need for technical skills and challenges facing today\'s auditor is greater than ever. The author team of Louwers, Blay, Sinason, Strawser, and Thibodeau has dedicated years of experience in the auditing field to this new edition of Auditing & Assurance Services, supplying the necessary investigative tools for future auditors. The tenth edition of Knapp\'s CONTEMPORARY AUDITING utilizes real-world cases to highlight the work environment of auditors. Using real-world examples and pointing out potential red flags, these cases help users to identify audit problem areas. Knapp\'s CONTEMPORARY AUDITING contains the most recent, compelling, and up-to-date examples. Those cases most widely used by adopters have been retained: Enron Corporation, Golden Bear Golf, Hopkins v. Price Waterhouse, Lehman Brothers, Leigh Ann Walker, Madoff Securities, The Trolley Dodgers, and ZZZZ Best Company. Many of the returning cases have been updated to include relevant circumstances and events that have occurred since the publication of the previous edition. This edition features 18 new cases. Three of them are comprehensive cases: AA Capital Partners, DHB Industries, and Navistar International Corporation. New cases in the Audits of High-Risk Accounts section include LocatePlus Holdings Corporation, Powder River Petroleum International, and Take-Two Interactive Software. The sections of the book that focus on ethical issues have three new cases: Accuhealth, Dell, and Wichita Falls. Section 5, Ethical Responsibilities of Independent Auditors, has new cases on IPOC International Growth Fund, Richard Grimes, Staff Accountant, and Ryden Trucking. The final new case is an international case, Longtop Financial Technologies Limited. The tenth edition fully integrates all recent risk assessment standards recently adopted by the auditing community. This text offers a structured approach to principles of auditing using International Standards on Auditing as its basis. Written by a team of influential professional auditors with a wealth of teaching experience this book provides a real world perspective on current auditing practices with coverage of cutting edge developments and techniques. As we begin the new year, this title is currently the most up-to-date auditing textbook on the market, covering all of the latest pronouncements through the end of 2011. The book\'s unique organization presents the auditing process in twelve concise chapters, with eight flexible, independent modules designed to be integrated into the course entirely at the instructor\'s discretion. Perhaps most importantly, this title is the only book on the market to fully integrate the Codification of the New Clarity Standards (including new section) issued by the Auditing Standards Board. As these standards will be effective for year-end audits after December 15, 2012, they will be covered on the CPA exam beginning in July 2013, when many current students will be taking the CPA exam after completing 150 hours of coursework. In addition, the Louwers book also brings the real world into the classroom through the addition of extensive Auditing Insights involving real issues facing today\'s professionals as well as the updated Apollo Shoes Casebook, the only stand-alone fraud audit case on the market (available on the book\'s website, www.mhhe.com/louwers5e).Throughout the revised text, the Louwers author team has updated each chapter to include the latest pronouncements, technology and case material for your auditing classes: This edition has fully integrated the eight new standards adopted by the PCAOB. And, most importantly, the risk assessment chapter was restructured to incorporate the exacting risk assessment process as outlined in the new PCAOB risk standards. The book has fully integrated the latest updates from the International Standards of Auditing (ISAs) and the Auditing Standards Board (ASB). Each chapter now begins with a list of the AU/ISA Sections that are covered from the Codification of Statements on Auditing Standards published by the AICPA and the list of PCAOB Auditing Standards covered in that chapter. This edition incorporates the major changes to the structure and the content of the auditing section of the CPA examination for 2011 and has been designed to provide multiple opportunities for students to practice questions that they will encounter on the CPA exam. Each chapter has an abundance of multiple choice questions. In addition, to provide experience with the task-based exam approach, Kaplan CPA Simulations are included in the text problem material and are also accessible at www.mhhe.com/louwers5e. These multiple choice questions and simulations allow the student to gain skills and pick up additional knowledge for success on the CPA Examination. The education version of ACL software is included free with the book. Exercises for use with the ACL software are available on the book\'s website. The book is also fully integrated with McGraw-Hill\'s Connect™ AccountingThe next evolution in online homework management and assessment, McGraw-Hill\'s Connect™ Accounting is an online assignment and assessment solution that connects you with the tools and resources you\'ll need to achieve success: Access to end-of-chapter material that provides immediate feedback and reports directly to your instructor\'s reports. There are many introductions to the animal ethics literature. There aren\'t many introductions to the practice of doing animal ethics. Bob Fischer\'s Animal Ethics: A Contemporary Introduction fills that gap, offering an accessible model of how animal ethics can be done today. The book takes up classic issues, such as the ethics of eating meat and experimenting on animals, but tackles them in an empirically informed and nuanced way. It also covers a range of relatively neglected issues in animal ethics, such as the possibility of insect sentience and the ethics of dealing with pests. Finally, the book doesn\'t assess every current practice using standard ethical theories, but tries to evaluate some of them using the moral frameworks endorsed by those involved. So, for instance, there is a chapter on the way that animal care and use committees try to justify some of the educational uses of animals, and the chapter on zoos considers the way that international zoological societies justify compromising animal welfare. The book wraps up with a discussion of the future of animal ethics. Each chapter opens with a helpful initial overview of the chapter and ends with a list of suggested readings to help students go further on their own.?? Key FeaturesCovers animal ethics from an empirically informed perspective, bringing philosophy into conversation with key issues in animal science, conservation biology, economics, ethology, and legal studies, among other fieldsProvides ample coverage of the most salient current topics, including, for example:Debates about which animals are sentientThe suffering of wild animalsResearch ethicsThe boundaries of activismAvoids suggesting that animal ethics is simply the practice of applying the right general theory to a problem, instead allowing readers to first work out the specific costs and benefits of making ethical decisionsImpresses upon the reader the need for her to work out for herself the best way forward with difficult ethical issues, suggesting that progress can indeed be madeIncludes summaries and recommended readings at the end of each chapter The Benefits of Reading Books
