5. ArgentinaGeneral Card AcceptanceCajeros automáticos (ATMs) are found in nearly every city and town in Argentina and can also be used for cash advances on credit cards. They’re the best way to get money, and nearly all have instructions in English. You can withdraw AR$300 several times from the same machine (simply make another transaction), but most home banks charge a withdrawal fee of AR$15 or equivalent – per transaction.(1)4Commodity overviewATM American Express Argentina: please click hereAmerican Express Travel Tips for Argentina: please click hereCustomer Service & Support: 0-810-888-2677American Express credit cards are generally accepted at (1): RestaurantsPetrol StationsTop-end HotelsCar Rental firmsTravel Agencies and AirlinesAmerican Express credit cards are valid in many establishments in Argentina. Some businesses add a recargo (surcharge) of 5% to 10% toward credit card purchases. The actual amount you’ll eventually pay depends upon the exchange rate not at the time of sale, but when the purchase is posted to an overseas account, sometimes weeks later. Some lower-end hotels and private tour companies are not accepting credit cards.(1)Estimated Spend Coverage = 97% 2012 Spend Coverage*Source *American Express 2012 Spend Coverage Study.Last updated: May 2015Confidential, Proprietary and Trade Secret Information of American Express

8. CanadaGeneral Card AcceptanceMany grocery and convenience stores, airports, and bus, train and ferry stations have ATMs. ATMs of Canada Post and INTERAC also spit out cash if you use an AMEX credit card.Visitors heading to Canada’s more remote regions won’t find an abundance of ATMs, so it is wise to cash up beforehand. 9. ChileGeneral Card AcceptanceAccessing funds through an ATM, known as un Redbanc is by far the easiest and most convenient way of carrying money while in Chile. Most ATMs have instructions in Spanish and English. You may have to pick an option titled 'foreign card' (tarjeta extranjera) before starting the transaction. You'll find machines in most towns (with the exception of Chile's Pacific Islands and small highland villages) and they are often open 24 hours. They give decent exchange rates though your bank will probably charge a fee for each foreign ATM transaction.(5)8Commodity overviewATM American Express Chile: please click hereAmerican Express Travel Tips for Chile: please click hereCustomer Service & Support: 600-600-86-86American Express credit cards are generally accepted at (5): Up-market restaurantsTravel AgenciesTop-end HotelsCar Rental firmsDepartment storesIf you've got plastic in your pocket (especially Amex) you'll be welcome in most established businesses. 10. ChinaGeneral Card AcceptanceATMs are common in Hong Kong and Macau. On the mainland, ATMs that take international cards include branches of the Bank of China, China Citic Bank, China UnionPay and the Industrial and Commercial Bank of China, where you can use American Express to withdraw cash. The network largely applies to sizable towns, cities and large airports.(6)9Commodity overviewATM American Express China: please click hereAmerican Express Travel Tips for China: please click here and select your desired CityCustomer Service & Support: 400-800-5555American Express credit cards are generally accepted at (6): Up-market restaurantsTravel AgenciesTop-end HotelsCar Rental firmsDepartment storesForeign credit cards of all common providers are of limited use in China. 14. MexicoGeneral Card AcceptanceATMs (caja permanente or cajero automático) are plentiful in Mexico, and are the easiest source of cash. You can use Amex to withdraw pesos from ATMs. The exchange rate that banks use for ATM withdrawals is normally better than the ‘tourist rate’ for currency exchange. To avoid the risk of ‘card cloning, ’ use ATMs only in secure indoor locations, not those in stand-alone booths. American Express cards can be used to obtain cash easily from ATMs in Mexico, and are accepted for payment by most airlines, car-rental companies and travel agents, plus many upper midrange and top-end hotels, and some restaurants and stores. Occasionally there’s a surcharge for paying by card, or a discount for paying cash. Making a purchase by credit card normally gives you a more favorable exchange rate than exchanging money at a bank. 15. NorwayGeneral Card AcceptanceNorwegian ATMs allow you to access cash in your home account with an ATM card from your home bank. ‘Mini-Banks’ (the Norwegian name for ATMs) are found adjacent to many banks and around busy public places, such as shopping centers. They accept major credit cards.(11)14Commodity overviewATM American Express Travel Tips for Norway: please click here and select your desired CityCustomer Service & Support: 22-96-08-00 American Express credit cards are accepted at (11): AirlinesTravelHotelsCar Rental firmsRestaurantsAmerican Express cards are widely accepted throughout Norway. Although credit or debit cards allow you to avoid the fees charged for changing cash or travellers cheques, such gains can be cancelled out by bank fees and not all places accept debit cards. Credit cards can be used to buy train tickets and are accepted on some (eg Hurtigruten), but not all, domestic ferries. 16. PhilippinesGeneral Card AcceptanceCredit cards can be used to get cash from thousands of ATMs throughout the country. Cash advances from ATMs are in local currency, and may be subject to a daily withdrawal limit apart from the American Express cash limit. Particularly in the big cities, ATMs operate 24 hours daily, and can be found in department stores, supermarkets and shopping malls, in addition to banks. Note that ATMs in the Philippines have a curious system of posting 'online' or 'offline' signs to indicate whether or not the machine is in operation. A shop-front sign that reads ‘American Express Cards Welcome‘ may well refer only to the Philippines-issued version, so check with the shop personnel by showing them your card. There are incidents of credit card fraud in the Philippines. To prevent this, keep a close look on your card at all times - never, for example, allow a shop clerk to disappear into a back room with it. 18. TurkeyGeneral Card AcceptanceATM machines are everywhere in Turkish cities, airports and even in most small towns. Note that Turkish ATM keypads usually do not have alphabetical keys (ABC for 2, DEF for 3). If your PIN/password is actually a word, and you're used to pressing the letter keys, you'll have to translate your password into numbers. (Your mobile phone keypad may have the letters on it).(14)17Commodity overviewATM American Express Turkey: please click hereAmerican Express Partner Turkey: T. 19. UkraineGeneral Card AcceptanceAutomated teller machines (ATMs) dot the landscape in Ukraine. Bankomats, as ATMs are known locally, are also found in major airport terminals, hotel lobbies, central post offices and Bars, as well as on the street. At Boryspil airport there are several in the arrivals hall. Some ATMs also distribute US Dollars (15).18ATM American Express Partner Ukraine: UKREXIM.American Express Travel Tips for Ukraine: please click hereCustomer Service & Support: 0-800-50-44-50Credit cards are in general still not as common or reliable in the Ukraine as in Western Europe. You cannot rely on using a credit card exclusively in the Ukraine. This method of payment is still very unpopular in Ukraine. Be ready to pay cash everywhere. Credit card and ATM fraud are wide-spread. Ukraine generally operates as a cash economy, and money scams are common. Although credit card and ATM use among Ukrainians is increasing, it is strongly recommended to exercise caution and use credit cards only at reputable businesses. You should avoid using ATMs on the street or in public places whenever possible. Machines located inside bank branches are generally safer.(15)Estimated Spend Coverage = 5% 2012 Spend Coverage*Source *American Express 2012 Spend Coverage Study.Last updated: May 2015Confidential, Proprietary and Trade Secret Information of American Express
