Jesus at the end of life
If you knew …
Being godly (= beautifully human) at the end of life
Being like Jesus at the end of life
The ‘conduct of the end game’
(Not – theology of death; bereavement and grief; complexities of old age – care system, care options, dementia, economics, social structures; end of life ethics of medicalisation, assisted suicide.)
Jesus has shone a light into the valley of the shadow of death. We still walk in it but we know where it will take us and we can navigate it (accompanied by him) with trust and grace.
Slide2Jesus at the end of life
The one minute version:
Father, forgive …
Woman, here is your son …
Today … paradise
My God, my God …
I thirst
It is finished
Father, into your hands …
Slide3Jesus at the end of life
“Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing”
Jesus shows that the end of life is a time for calm-spirited coming to terms with people who’ve wronged you and pains which have hurt you – by talking to your heavenly Father about them
Slide4Jesus at the end of life
“Dear woman, here is your son …
Here is your mother”
Jesus shows that, marked by realism and gentleness, the end of life is a time for caring for others, preparing them for our death, and ‘putting our affairs in order’
Slide5Jesus at the end of life
“I tell you the truth.
Today you will be with me in paradise.”
Jesus shows that, assured in our own forward look, the end of life can be a time when speaking just a few words of good news will bring comfort and blessing to others
Slide6Jesus at the end of life
“My God, my God, why have
you forsaken me?”
Jesus shows that the end of life is a time for being honest and out loud with God about our pain, confusion, loneliness, and loss
Slide7Jesus at the end of life
“I thirst”
Jesus shows that the taking seriously our bodily needs and depending on others to meet those needs is no loss of true dignity
Jesus at the end of life
“It is finished”
Jesus shows that with fullness, not emptiness, we need not cling desperately to life but can be ready to die, just as at the end of a long day we lay our head on our pillow and are ready to sleep
Slide9Jesus at the end of life
“Father, into your hands I commit my spirit”
Jesus shows that the end of life is to be marked with a trustful and confident surrender of ourselves into the Father’s arms

“Jesus shows that …”. But Jesus is not just the
example
who shows us a godly end of life in his death, he is the
Saviour
who secures a new beginning of life by his death.
We are forgiven by his intercession; he places us in a family; he assures us of paradise and more; he is abandoned so that we will never be; he thirsts so that we may drink; he completes the work and pays the debt so that we are free; he rests with the Father – and we join him there.
