What Are Context Clues?

Context clues are hints that help define strange words

Are often found in the sentence(s) around the unfamiliar word

We can find the meaning of words if we look closely at the sentences we are readingSlide3

Where Are They Found?

Context clues are most often found in the same sentence as the unknown word

Looking at the words directly next to it can be really useful

We have to look carefully at the words, because some context clues are easy to missSlide4

Types of Clues

Definition clue

The author gives the meaning of a word indirectly

The shark swam around the reef, staring at the coral bed.

Synonym/Antonym Clue

The author uses a similar word or one that is opposite in the same sentence

The dolphin swam fervently, desperately speeding away from the group of sharks.
