ENHANCED TRAIN CONTROL Enhanced Train Control ( ETC ) is Alta Rail Technology’s

solution that comprises on board technology, wayside equipment and control center software in order to provide railroads with a complete trac control solution for both signaling and non-signaling territories. The system relies on a communication infrastructure (Satellite, Radio, Cellular) that enables a digital transmission of Train Movement Authority Information (Track Warrant or Signaling) to the train. Enhanced Train Control brings additional safety to railroad operation by implementing dynamic speed control and electronic fence functionalities. It is also an important productivity

tool that allows supervisors to set specific transit time and fuel consumption goals to each session on a track. Finally, through its ability to store and audit all train trips performed in a certain period, it creates the conditions for a continuous improvement of the railroad’s performance. ENHANCED TRAIN CONTROL On the on board side, the system is comprised of an On Board Computer ( OBC ), a Communication Module, an End of Train ( EoT ) device and a Data Acquisition

Module ( DAQ ) that interfaces with the locomotive to collect system information such as oil temperature, oil pressure, pipe pressure, throttle position and current level. A key component of the OBC is the event recorder that stores data from each trip that is uploaded into a data analyzer application. The software’s graphical interface allows supervisors to easily trace each engineer’s behavior enabling a continuous improvement process through coaching and training. ON BOARD EQUIPMENT

ENHANCED TRAIN CONTROL The On Board Computer was designed as a safety equipment that later

evolved to become a productivity tool. It provides two major safety features: Electronic Fence, that enforces the limits of an authority through the implementation of a breaking curve that stops the train before the end of the session block where the authority ends; and, Dynamic Speed Control, through its ability to stop the train in an over-speeding situation. The OBC has also an important role in helping the train engineer to follow railway operational rules, allowing the railway to pursue a standard conduction pattern. A target for fuel oil consumption and transit time is displayed for each

session block, helping the engineer to drive the train. Other useful information available includes current speed; maximum speed allowed (defined according to the route and speed restrictions); grades and curves (based on the network map and train location); and, icons and alerts on the current status of the unit. ENHANCED TRAIN CONTROL In the Control Center resides a suite of applications that assist dispatchers with managing train movements throughout the track network in a safe and ecient manner. The software follows AAR General Code of

Operations Rules. It assures that two trains do not occupy the same track segment in opposite directions by implementing a robust interlocking algorithm for a dark territory network. The central component is the Safe Train Control , a scalable solution that operates in both signaling and non-signaling environments and is independent of the communication infrastructure adopted. The application is user friendly, with a customizable dispatcher display and video wall, a complete set of alarms and a high safety level authority process. CONTROL CENTER SYSTEMS

One proven way to improve the performance of a railroad is to motivate train engineers with incentives to reduce fuel oil consumption and transit time. To support this objective, Alta Rail Technology developed Rail Rally a software module that uses data from the OBC’s event recorder to rank driving performance by criteria management wishes to reward. The Planning and eXecution ( PX ) system is a time x space graphical tool for planning and optimizing train movements and meetings. Its easy to use interface enables the dispatcher to simulate train schedules and quickly adapt to track

interdictions, accidents or temporary speed restrictions. PX also allows the dispatcher to set a route or send a track warrant directly through the ETC/Control Center system. The Speed Restriction System ( SRS ) completes the suite by allowing the dynamic inclusion/exclusion of speed restrictions in the track network. IMPROVING RAILWAY RESULTS
