What is the World Wide Web?
The
World Wide Web
, or simply Web, is a way of accessing information over the medium of the Internet.
It is an information-sharing model that is
built on top of the Internet
.
The Web uses the
HTTP protocol

ARPANET
The internet was first established in the ’60s by the US Defense department
It provided a form of communication when all else had failed – as a result of nuclear war
The project was originally called ARPANET
(Advanced Research Projects Agency Network)
The network was initially funded by the Advanced Research Projects Agency (ARPA, later DARPA) within the U.S. Department of Defense Slide7

TCP/IP and Tim Berners-Lee
Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) was invented to allow other networks to connect to ARPANET and thus it became the INTERNET
Tim Berners-Lee
is credited with the creation of the world wide web
By the mid ’90s the internet had experienced explosive growth, with the number of computers connected to the internet doubling every yearSlide8

Computers at Stanford and UCLA connected for the first time. In effect, they were the first hosts on what would one day become the Internet
Arpanet made its first

switch over to the TCP/IP protocols
The domain name system was created
This made addresses on the internet more user friendly compared to its numerical IP address
One of the first major Internet worms was released. Referred to as "The Morris Worm", because it was written by Robert Tappan Morris
The code for the World Wide Web was written by Tim Berners-Lee, based on his proposal from the year before, along with the standards for HTML, HTTP, and URLs
ARPANET ceased to exist
Tim Berners-Lee wrote the proposal for the World Wide Web

The
Wayback
Machine is an internet archive website
It takes snapshots of most
websites, throughout the year,
so that you can go back and look at what your favourite website looked like in
the past,
even back in the 1990s or early 2000’s
This archive currently has 469 billion web pages saved over time
The following are some descriptions and screen shots comparing how a website looks today to a date in the past that my students created after using the

Where good ideas come from
Slow Hunch – Breakthrough ideas take a long time to evolve
It took 10 years for the inventor of the www – Tim Berners Lee, to create it.
We are more distracted by the internet.
However, it has provided more ways for us to connect and complete our ideas.
