What is the Internet?

The Internet connects millions of computers together globally, forming a network in which any computer can communicate with any other computer as long as they are both connected to the Internet. (

What is the World Wide Web?

The

World Wide Web

, or simply Web, is a way of accessing information over the medium of the Internet.

It is an information-sharing model that is

built on top of the Internet

.

The Web uses the

HTTP protocol

, only one of the languages spoken over the Internet, to transmit data.

The Web utilizes browsers, such as Internet Explorer, to access Web documents called Web pages that are linked to each other via hyperlinks.(

ARPANET

The internet was first established in the ’60s by the US Defense department

It provided a form of communication when all else had failed – as a result of nuclear war

The project was originally called ARPANET

(Advanced Research Projects Agency Network)

The network was initially funded by the Advanced Research Projects Agency (ARPA, later DARPA) within the U.S. Department of Defense Slide7

7

TCP/IP and Tim Berners-Lee

Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) was invented to allow other networks to connect to ARPANET and thus it became the INTERNET

Tim Berners-Lee

is credited with the creation of the world wide web

By the mid ’90s the internet had experienced explosive growth, with the number of computers connected to the internet doubling every yearSlide8

Computers at Stanford and UCLA connected for the first time. In effect, they were the first hosts on what would one day become the Internet

Arpanet made its first

trans-Atlantic connection

with the University of London

Email was first developed by Ray Tomlinson

The decision was made for the “@” symbol to separate the user name from the computer name

Usenet was an internet-based discussion system, allowing people from around the globe to converse by posting public messagesSlide9

January 1, 1983 was the deadline for Arpanet computers to

switch over to the TCP/IP protocols

The domain name system was created

This made addresses on the internet more user friendly compared to its numerical IP address

One of the first major Internet worms was released. Referred to as "The Morris Worm", because it was written by Robert Tappan Morris

The code for the World Wide Web was written by Tim Berners-Lee, based on his proposal from the year before, along with the standards for HTML, HTTP, and URLs

ARPANET ceased to exist

Tim Berners-Lee wrote the proposal for the World Wide Web

You'll find wonderful things surfing the pages of the Internet

an online library of millions of books, films, audio recordings, web pages and more

The Internet Archive is a massive effort to digitize the full spectrum of human knowledge

Go to

http://archive.org/web/web.php

to try out the

Wayback

Machine. Type in a website address and view it during different periods of time.

The

Wayback

Machine

The

Wayback

Machine is an internet archive website

It takes snapshots of most

websites, throughout the year,

so that you can go back and look at what your favourite website looked like in

the past,

even back in the 1990s or early 2000’s

This archive currently has 469 billion web pages saved over time

The following are some descriptions and screen shots comparing how a website looks today to a date in the past that my students created after using the

Wayback

Machine…

What is the internet…really? (video)

More and more of our lives are spent on-line and surfing the internet.

What would you draw to show someone the internet? Think of 5 things to draw to represent the internet and list them on your page.)

What is the internet…really?

If you followed the cord- could you go places on the internet? – of course not.

60 Hudson St. New York. This is one of 12 large data centers.

They lay large cables underwater. If one cable breaks. They have to go out on a big boat, pick up the cable, fuse it back together and lay it back.

These cables are sometimes 3000-8000 miles long.Slide24

What is the internet…really?

They created a belt around the world of underwater cables. “A Beam of light”

First started with a hacksaw and then acted like jewellers attaching the tiny fibres together.

“Wired people should know something about wires”

How has your view of the internet changed after watching this video? Explain. How did your 10 pictures compare with how the internet is portrayed in this video?Slide25

Where good ideas come from

Slow Hunch – Breakthrough ideas take a long time to evolve

It took 10 years for the inventor of the www – Tim Berners Lee, to create it.

We are more distracted by the internet.

However, it has provided more ways for us to connect and complete our ideas.
