Three other suspects are already behind bars since last week. In welcoming this swift arrest of the suspects, SAPU would like them denied Bail. We are of the firm view that only tough action against alleged cop killers will assist in curbing t he continued killing of the men and women in blue. We acknowledge the arrest of the suspects is a little consolation to the family of constable Mahlatsi who was mercilessly killed on the line of duty. His family was expecting him to come back home alive so the arrest is not good enough to them. Whilst the arrests may be of no significance to the family of the deceased member, there is no way that cop killers can be allowed to walk free. We are calling for the criminal justice system t

2 o take a stand against alleged cop ki
o take a stand against alleged cop killers more especially that it was established that one of the suspects has been positively linked to another case of a cop killing. It is clear that these people when granted Bail they continue with their killing spree of our members. We ar e also looking for a lengthy prison term if the suspects are convicted. SAPU believes the state is not doing enough to protect its own servants. Police officials are killed at alarmingly high rate in South Africa. It seems as if we are in a war zone here. We are calling for an aggressive approach to protect police officers. It is clear that as police officials we are on our own. We have not even heard a single word of condemnation of police killings let alone a strategy to curb senseless and brutal police k illings in our country from the highest office in the land.
