Anecdote

A

short account of a particular incident or event

used as support for a statement made

For example…

At the beginning of

The Crucible

, Reverend Parris accuses Abigail of dancing in the woods AND speculates why she was fired from the Proctor household. Abigail then provides

anecdotes

in regards to what really happened.

For instance,

she starts

narrating

chimerical

stories to justify her actions.

She also claims that

Goody Proctor is a

liar. She uses these short stories/accounts to SUPPORT her claims.

APHORISMS

Aphorism is a

brief, cleverly worded statement that makes a wise observation about life.

They may be used to entertain, instruct, and inspire.

They can be on any subject matter.

Franklin provides what’s known as his 19

aphorisms

that demonstrate his

legendary humor, insight into human nature, and philosophy of

life (seen on page 84)
