IntroductionThis project is about examining the method of iteration and real world applications of physics through coherent x-ray imaging. It is important to investigate this area of science as it can led to future developments. What expectations did I have of physics and physicists when I started.I expected physics to involve a great deal of mathematics, I have now realized that physics is not pure maths, it is used as a way to describe and articulate concepts

Aim/MotivationOur aim was to be able to recognise the potential of physics and be able to apply the method of iteration.Scientists are motivated to investigate this area of science as it has great potential that could ultimately improve the quality of life. As by understanding what we are encountered with it can be further developed.

How has being part of GTP changed my appreciation for physics?By being a part of GTP my appreciation for physics has grown as I can see the importance in the field . Physics develops an understanding of why our physical world is how it is and through this program I have been shown a small part of what can be done with physics. The program has encouraged me to peruse physics in my senior high school years and potentially university.

How has our understanding of science, scientists and career opportunities changed through this experience. Relate to the work that you have experienced in the lab or the

department.During this program I have learnt that the career opportunities in physics are not just limited to physics. A degree in physics goes beyond that as the skills taught are easily transferable and universal. Skills like problem solving transcend across all work places and can led to many unique opportunities.

ConclusionsI have learnt about light diffraction and the applications of physics.I have come to realise that I am capable of perusing physics and am determined to do so.I have learnt that the media’s representation of physicists is very out-dated and far from the truth.I am more likely to continue physics in year 12 and potentially university.Acknowledgements- The name of department you have been working in: School of PhysicsNames of Mentors- Haydn, Olivia , Eroia Barone-Nugent, Harry Quiney- The Growing Tall Poppies Science Partnership Program :

Reflection about the job opportunities that physics can open up for me.-Business-Software development-Research -Engineering-Teaching-Financial analyst -Scientific Journalist-Medicine-Astronomy -Meteorologist-GeophysicsThere are countless opportunities available. How important is it to know the types of jobs you can follow to the subject choices you make?It is important to know where your subject choices can take you. This to me means that you can not waste subject choices and by knowing where your subjects can take you, you can become aware of the opportunities available.

Briefly describe what you did and how

. How was working with scientists different from the usual investigation and inquiry you do at school?

What data did you collect and what did it meanOver the course of the program we studied light , diffraction and coherent x-ray imaging .We did this through practical investigations, discussions and application of knowledge. Working with scientists was a refreshing change from the general school curriculum as the work was more interactive and I was shown the applications of what we were studying. By understanding the potential in this field of science I more inclined to develop an interest and see the importance of the work. We collected data from laser diffraction and the wavelengths of various gases. This was then explained through real world examples such as a rainbow, and why the colours appear as they do. This sparked my interest, furthered my understanding and was different from general school teaching.

How is this project related to a real world problem?

Applications of this field of study can assist in fighting world health issues. By being able to determine the structural composition of a membrane proteins scientists can develop a deeper understanding of the membrane protein’s functionality. This increased understanding encourage s developments like structure base drug design and these drugs can assists in fighting disease. By being able to counteract diseases lives are saved and the quality of life is improved.

Challenging Stereotypes of what I thought physicists were

like

Male vs female stereotypesI originally held a generalised view that physicists are predominantly male, this is reflected in the media . There is no reason as to why women cannot be physicists or study science, and yet women are not often portrayed as physicists. This program has challenged the stereotype of what I thought physicists were like as I have been exposed to real physicists opposed to the sensationalised male representative. Can I identify with physicists and physics? What they look like and whether I can see myself doing similar things to them. I can identify with physicists as they are normal people, not like the socially awkward version of physicists portrayed on TV. Physics is a very interesting subject and one that offers an intellectual challenge to those who pursue it.Do I think I am able to do physics, am I capable?I believe that I can peruse physics as long as I contribute the required work and am dedicated to my studies.Has it changed my mind about studying physics or staying in physics studies?I have always had an interest in physics but was unsure if I was to continue the class or not in year 12. By taking part in this program I am no longer afraid of taking up physics as a year 12 subject, as I believe I am capable of achieving in the class. When choosing subjects I look as the assessment, course content involved, and outcomes of the course. This program has given me a detailed understanding of what opportunities can arise from taking physics and I look forward to taking the class.
