Technical Properties

Solar Screen Material can be used for a variety of applications, such as:

Roller Shades

Roman Shades

Panel Tracks

Exterior Retractable Screens and Awnings

Fabric Tension Systems

Fixed Screens (non movable)

Printing Medium

Partitions and Room Dividers

Slide4

Technical Properties

Solar Shade ColorColor is one of the most important factors in determining performance. Dark colors show less dirt and pollutants and provide the best solar protection and transparency. Light colors reflect heat and help preserve the levels of natural light.

Light Transmission

MYTH: Tighter weave will significantly

reduce light transmission

FACT: Color is a much more important

factor

MYTH: Increased openness will provide better transparency

FACT: Again,

color is a much more important factor

Example: 10% open charcoal

Tv

= 12% (visible light transmission)

1% open white

Tv

= 15%

Slide5

Technical Properties

Understanding Fenestration Properties

Fenestration, as defined by The National Fenestration Rating Council (NFRC), is any opening in a building's envelope including windows, doors and skylights. In terms of Solar Screen Shades, we need to understand these fenestration properties that measure performance.

Thermal Factors

Thermal factors are comprised of Ts (Solar Transmittance), Rs (Solar Reflectance) and As (Solar Absorption).

Solar shade fabric is also tested for visible transmission (

Tv

), the portion of the sunlight the eye can see, as well as the shading coefficient, which is an indicator of the reduction of solar heat gain.

The thermal factors are used to calculate the

shading coefficient

. The shading coefficient represents the percentage of solar heat gain that is transmitted to the interior through the glass and shading system.

Slide6

Technical Properties

Fenestration properties are represented on binder cards and swatch decks for customer reference.

Slide7

Technical Properties

Thermal Factors – Ts Ts: Solar Transmittance – proportion of solar energy transmitted through the fabric. A low percentage indicates good filtration of solar energy by the fabric. Low transmittance is necessary for controlling direct sunlight. This ensures appropriate control of glare and visual comfort.

Slide8

Solar Screen Overview

Thermal Factors – Rs

Rs: Solar Reflectance – proportion of solar radiation reflected by the fabric.

A high percentage means the fabric performs well at reflecting solar energy. High reflectance is good for controlling solar heat gain with internal applications.

It can also result in excessive glare on the interior during periods of direct sunlight. High transmission and high reflectance are normally synonymous with light colored fabrics.

Slide9

Solar Screen Overview

Thermal Factors – As

As: Solar Absorption – proportion of solar radiation absorbed by the fabric. Absorbed solar energy becomes heat.

A lower percentage means the fabric absorbs little solar energy.

Medium to dark color fabrics will absorb and thus control visible light better than light colors.

Slide10

Technical Properties

How Thermal Factors Affect a Room

Temperature of room before the sun rises is 53ºF.

As the sun heats temperature increases to 62ºF.

Heat Gain = 9ºF

Temperature of room before the sun rises is 53ºF.

As the sun heats temperature increases to 77ºF.

Heat Gain = 24ºF

Slide11

Technical Properties

All these factors are and will be listed in the fabric information. These thermal factors become important in commercial bids where specific fenestration properties are required. They are currently represented as follows:

Solar Transmittance

Solar Reflectance

Solar

Absorbtance

Visual Transmittance

These refer to types of window glass.

C/L = clear glass

H.A. = Heat Absorbing Glass

Slide12

Technical Properties

Light Colors:Provide high levels of visible light transmission (Tv) while protecting from harmful effects of the sun.Help reduce solar heat gainProtect from UV raysPreserve natural levels of light

Dark Colors:Reduce visible light transmissionImprove transparency during daylightBecomes less visible in the windowReduces solar heat gainShows less dirt than lighter colors

Light vs. Dark

Technical Properties

The technical difference between light and dark fabrics…

The

Ts

number is lower on the dark fabric indicating that this fabric will let in less sunlight than the light fabric.

The

Rs

number is higher on the white fabric which tells us that this fabric performs much better at reflecting sunlight which will control the solar heat gain. It also can indicate glare in periods of direct sunlight.

The

As

number being lower on the white fabric tells us that the fabric absorbs less solar energy. Because the darker color absorbs more energy, it tends to control the visible light more effectively.

The

Tv

number indicates what percentage of the sunlight you can visibly see through the fabric – which is also an indicator of solar heat gain.

Setting Alkenz Apart

Lifetime Warranty

Many sunscreen fabrics come with a short warranty period, leaving you responsible if something goes wrong.

Only Alkenz by RollEase® SUNSHADOW® Solar Screen Fabrics are backed by a lifetime warranty. Our fabrics are manufactured througha state-of-the-art process using high-quality PVC. By offering industry-leading quality, we confidently stand behind our fabrics through exceptional customer support and a warranty that lasts for the life of the product.

Slide39

Setting Alkenz Apart

“Green PVC”

Alkenz

prides itself on cutting edge product design, specializing in the manufacturing of environmentally friendly woven PVC fabrics for use in products for the home and commercial interiors. PVC is durable, easy to maintain and provides the aesthetic qualities customers want.

By common definition PVC is not green, but we are close.

Alkenz

uses only post industrial content which offers low VOC (Volatile Organic Compound) adhesives and all fabrics are certified

Oeko

-Tex 100. This means that over the life cycle of the product, there is a relatively small environmental impact.

Non-EDC (Endocrine Disrupting Chemicals)

Non-VOC (Volatile Organic Compounds)

Heavy Metal Free

Chemical Adhesive Free

Slide40

Setting Alkenz Apart

Low Flaw Rates

The flaw rates for Alkenz material have been estimated to be about 75% better than industry standard. Consistently low flaw rates maximize fabricator profits by minimizing scrap.

Low Odor

Specially formulated non-toxic PVC does not contain odor causing compounds generally associated with solar screen material.

Consistent Roll Lengths

Rolls are always 33 yard (30M) long. Most solar screen producers deduct the flaws from the rolls whereas

Alkenz

adds to get to the 33 yards to account for any flaws. In doing this, customers are always guaranteed a certain length which streamlines purchases and helps in reduction of scrap.
