CALL OUT FOR PROFESSIONAL DANCERS The Choreographers and Composers Lab 2015 6 th - 17 th July 2015 Phoenix Dance Theatre Leeds Phoenix Dance Theatre is delighted to announce a Choreographers and Composers Lab in July 2015; a two week intensive in our state of the art dance centre in Leeds. We are looking for four dancers to take part. Designed for professional choreographers and composers at an early stage of their career, this course will offer a rare opportunity to focus on the creative process of research and experimentation with the emphasis on composition in music and dance. This course will enable participants to collaborate with emerging choreographers and composers in an exploratory, yet professional environment. ‘Having had the good fortune to have been nurtured myself, I value the importance of providing the opportunity for others to be nurtured and supported, to explore their creativity in a safe environment. The pressure to produce a finished item can often cloud the creative process. Therefore giving time and space can be the most valuable offer made to an emerging artist at this stage of their development’ - Sharon Watson Details of the course for participating dancers The course will be led by Phoenix Dance Theatre’s Artistic Director & Choreographer Sharon Watson and Independent Music Director & Composer Ken Hesketh. Four choreographers and four composers will be selected to work with twelve professional dancers and four musicians from various backgrounds to collaborate over an intensive two - week period . The focus will not be the creation of finished works; rather the course will encourage participants to think about creation in different and challenging ways. Initially through task based exercises and in the later stages of the course, collaboratively developing ideas to enhance choreographic practice. The spirit of the course is to provide a secure structure while remaining flexible and responsive to the needs of participants. A n informal sharing to an invited audience will provide an opportunity to gain feedback at the end of the two - week course. Lectures and workshops delivered by invit ed industry professionals will punctuate the course aiming to provoke discussion, ‘inject’ fresh perspective, encourage questions and support the creative process across the two - week period.
