Chunk each stanza using textual evidence to support your findingsSlide9

Chunk OneStanza 1……Each line asserts the speaker’s strength and power, as she imagines herself as a female goddess.

She claims that the sphinx and the pyramids are her creation. She professes to have walked the Fertile Crescent, from ancient Mesopotamia and Ancient Egypt.

She incorporates Science and Religion, She refers to supernovas, which only occur every one hundred years.

The connotation of “I am bad” is I am awesome!Slide10

Chunk TwoStanza 2….The narrator is a goddess, the mother of Nefertiti, whose name means beautiful or perfect woman.

The narrator is also equal to Allah, since she sat “on the throne, drinking nectar with Allah.

The narrator says her tears during childbirth created the Nile River, the longest river in the world. The Nile was so important that its flood and drought cycle became the basis for the Egyptian seasons.

She is once again self confident and proud to be a woman. Slide11

Chunk ThreeStanza 3….The narrator’s gaze is so powerful that it burned out the Sahara Desert from a forest.

The desert is 3000 miles wide from east to west, and she claims to have crossed it in two hours, making her superhuman.

The narrator also refers to herself as a gazelle, one of the fastest animals in the world, meaning she is too swift for capture by those who may see her as prey.Slide12

Chunk FourStanza 4……The narrator again claims a child, a son named Hannibal, a great Carthaginian general who despite winning most all of his battles, lost the war in Rome.

Even though he did not win the war, he is well renowned for his strength and his goddess mother’s strength is matchless!Slide13

Chunk FourStanza 4…….Next, the narrator says Noah was her son, responsible for saving all of mankind, allowing the world to be repopulated after a period of sin and destruction.

She also credits her son for rebuilding New/ark the city of Newark was the site of six days of racially based rioting that changed the city. White residents then moved to the suburbs, and for the first time, black residents were given a voice in city politics!Slide14

Chunk FiveStanza 5…….Giovanni gives herself credit for creating precious resources from her body and bodily functions.

She also uses the allusion to Christopher Columbus discovering the world is round.Slide15
