How Holocausts HappenSlide2

Tennyson famously described mother nature as “red in tooth and claw.”

(

Memorium

A.H.H.

) The tides of planetary change, predation, extinctions events, and other natural causes are blood red. Nature is not nice. It’s a killer. See, Ferrer, “Nature is a Jerk,” (8 April 16).In this way, we seem to have taken after our mother.

What’s a “Holocaust”?

Gk.

holos

+

kaustos

“whole” “burned.” (1) Refers etymologically to a

jewish sacrificial offering “burned whole” on the altar. (2) Indicates a thorough destruction involving extensive loss of life, especially through fire (i.e., “nuclear holocaust”). (3) Also refers specifically to the Nazi genocidal acts against the Jews in WWII.*Sources: Merriam-Webster, and Oxford Dict. Slide16

What keeps holocausts from happening today?

International law?

Established Democratic Governance?

Free trade and Capitalism?

Human Rights legislation?Ideals of love, peace, and tolerance?

Political Correctness, Progressivism, and Political Liberalism?

Fear of Mutual Destruction (Nuclear Peace Theory)?

Education?Slide17

“Man . . . Is a tame or civilized animal; nevertheless, he requires proper instruction and a fortunate nature, and then of all animals he becomes the most divine and most

civilized; but if he be insufficiently

or ill-educated he is the most

savage

of earthly creatures.”

Plato

Laws VI, 766ASlide18

What keeps holocausts from happening today?

International law?

Established Democratic Governance?

Free trade?

Human Rights legislation?Fear of Mutual Destruction (Nuclear Peace Theory)?

Education?

There are a lot of causal factors, but to really know this answer we need to understand what causes mass crimes in the first place.

So we need to ask, how do Holocausts happen?Slide19

How do holocausts happen?

1) It only takes 1 bad dude and a compliant populace

“Only one European really wanted war—Adolf Hitler”

(

John Keegan, 1989

)

“Historians are, rightly, nearly unanimous that . . . the

causes of the Second World War were the personality and the aims of Adolf Hitler.” (F.H. Hinsley, quoted in Meuller 2004)Military Psychologists widely agree that German would never have converted it’s latent anti-Semitism, nationalism, ressentiment*, and militarism into the aggressions of WWII if not for the unique influence of Hitler. (Pinker 208-9). *Ressentiment --”oppressive awareness of the futility of trying to improve one's status in life or in society.” (Dictionary.com). Applied to a society it is the felt sense that your culture is “meant” for greatness so it’s current failure to thrive is from oppressive external forces, such an overt enemy or outgroup.Slide20

How do holocausts happen?

2) We’re programmed for compliance already

(see Pinker 2011, pg. 557)

“People take their cues on how to behave from other people” (Pinker, 558)

Conditioning (B.F. Skinner)—obedience/agreement is more directly rewarding.

Role compliance (Stanford Prison Experiments)

Submission to authority (Stanley Milgram Electro-Shock Experiments)Diffusion of Responsibility (Kitty Genovese Case)Group Think (Parroting what the leader wants to hear; Irving Janis 1972)Polarization (peer pressure towards liking or disliking; Myers & Lamm 1976)The “Abilene Paradox” (Jerry B. Harvey, 1974)Slide21

How do holocausts happen?

Desensitization

“Gradualism” (Pinker, pg. 567)

“Escalation Game” (Katz, 1987—citing the Milgram experiment)

See also, Christopher Robert Browning,

Ordinary Men

(1992)

The human conscience doesn’t readily affirm wonton violence at first blush. But with a second and third glance, matched with the will-to-believe, we can manipulate ourselves to agree with evil. Yet even then, we still have a moral sense which normally tells us—unless we are sociopaths—that we need to find the “good” in those seeming evils before they are justified. We still want to evil, to do violence, to harm others but we want it to be acceptable first.Slide22

How do holocausts happen?

4) Redefinition

“Language rules” (Arendt, pg. 85)

“Politics of Language” (Orwell, 1946)

Ex.,: Terrorism = freedom fighting; Motherhood = maternal slavery; Genocide = Ethnic Cleansing, Mass Murder = Depopulation, etc.

Language games (propaganda/legalese) serve several purposes.

Sanctify/Hero-

icize one’s causeReduce the weight of the crime/Exculpate the criminal Adjust the moral borders, making room for this behavior.Fabricate a sense of plausible deniabilityExaggerate their offenses.Dehumanize/degrade victims—”cockroach,” “filth,” “parasite,” etc.Slide23

How do holocausts happen?

5) Ethic of Convenience

Social evolution (Eugenics laws)

Hyper-nationalism,

Emperialism

(Nazism & Fascism)

Pragmatism, Consequentialism (Marxism)

Most every doomsday scenario among villains and supervillains is an ethic of convenience where human lives can be traded like bargaining chips for some ultimate desired outcome (Heroes, Kingsmen, Age of Ultron, etc.)Hanna Arendt suggests that the “face of evil” looks like a mirror. Horrific evil is banal, mortal, and looks like any one of us. Holocausts happen, in part because we adjust our ethical outlook so that, we think, only psychopaths, would do gross evil. No, we are fully capable ourselves. (see, Arendt, 1963).Slide24

How do holocausts happen?

6) Authoritarian Government (too little freedom) or Anarchic States (too much ‘freedom’)

It seems liberty can break when pressed too hard or stretched to thin. When our will goes wrong like that, wickedness explodes into action.

For every “1984” there’s a “Lord of the Flies.”

Pinker notes authoritarian regimes of the modern era, but also affirms the importance of a “leviathan” government (Hobbes) to rescue primitive states from tribalism and antinomianism. (pgs. 1-377).Slide25

How do holocausts happen?

7)

Cycle of Revenge

(vendettas, injustice, etc.)

“The Moralization gap” (Pinker, 488-9),

A.K.A., “The Magnitude gap” (

Baumeister

, 160)The Versailles Treaty (1919)—left Germany wholly unable to pay the reparations. Ruined economy.Rwandan Hutu’s, April-June 1994 killed 800,000 Tutsis because of a Tribalist vendetta. The Tutsis had wrong them years before.Contrast with Nelson Mandela’s leadership in response to Apartheid. He’d become a Christian in jail, adopted an ethic of forgiveness and implemented that in SA.Slide26

How do holocausts happen?

8) Xenophobia

Competition for Limited resources (real or perceived)

In-group vs. Out-group

Simplified categorizations

Discrimination on non-essential traits

Empathetic responses can be turned on and off depending on how we understand our relation with that person.

Hint: Mirror neurons aren’t a miracle cure for naturalistic ethics (see Pinker, 576-8)Slide27

How do holocausts happen?

9) Erase the Face

It’s not enough to de-humanize the victim, “

hemoclysm

” (lit., “blood flood”) requires delegitimizing their person.

Not “lesser human” but “less-than-human”

This means physical distance from them. Ex., deportation, segregation, racism/sexism/tribalism.

Perhaps also, media restrictions (no pictures). Don’t enter into their personal stories for fear of sympathizing with the enemy. Contra Diary of Ann Frank.Instrumental view of service workers, or otherwise unavoidable encounters with the “out-group”Slide28

How do holocausts happen?

10) Fear and Anger

Self-preservation instincts are no safe guard against irrationality, especially when fear, alarmism, and anger are swirled in.

Few routes to irrationality are quicker than anger.

Fear is perhaps the deadliest of all the emotions especially when unbalanced by wisdom, truth, and love.

“No beast is more savage than man when possessed with power answerable only to his rage.” Plutarch,

Cicero.Slide29

Pinker’s Thesis

Violence Is Declining.Slide30

Critique of Pinker’s Thesis

Pinker is largely right. Well-established democracy, thriving international trade, long-standing human rights legislation all have a proven history of reducing much of the

tribalistic

and aggressive violence.

But, there are some

huge

caveats. Slide31

Critique of Pinker’s Thesis

First, brute-numbers vs. percentages—the 20

th

cent. was still the deadliest, by far, than any other century on record.

Second, ISIS.

Third, his biblical exegesis is an additional violence (it’s that

bad

).Fourth, he doesn’t understand religion, and especially not Christianity when it comes to it’s positive influence on history.Fifth, another risk appears for those who don’t appreciate the positives of Christian (& religious) influence in history. Those who don’t believe in demons see no need to lock their cages (i.e., ISIS). Sixth, human wickedness is horrifically inventive.Slide32

Critique of Pinker’s Thesis

History directs the future by searing callouses where we sought to answer timeless problems in old ways, ways like slavery,

emperialism

, and eugenics. As we face the same timeless problems, we must innovate new answers where we can no longer stomach, endure, or excuse old answers. Unfortunately, the means of self-defeat are infinite. If the Reaper, is anything, he’s inventive. Each generation forges new paths to the same old graves.

In our era, it seems we may have displaced our violence onto the perfect victim.Slide33

Critique of Pinker’s Thesis

First, brute-numbers vs. ratios—the 20

th

cent. was still the deadliest.

Second, ISIS.

Third, his biblical exegesis is an additional violence. (it’s

bad

).Fourth, he doesn’t understand religion, and especially not Christianity when it comes to it’s positive influence on history.Fifth, a different risk appears for those who don’t rightly appreciate the positives of Christian influence in history. Those who don’t believe in demons see no need to lack their cages. Sixth, human wickedness is horrifically inventive.Seventh, abortion ruins most all of his measures.Slide34

How does Abortion Measure Up?

1) 1 (or more) Instigator

2) Psychology of Compliance

3) Desensitization

4) Redefinition

5) Ethic of Convenience

6) Extreme Government

7) Cycle of Revenge8) Xenophobia9) Erase the face10) Fear and AngerAbortion?Slide35

“If abortion counts as a form of violence, the West has made no progress in its treatment of children. Indeed, because effective abortion has become widely available only since the 1970’s…the moral state of the West hasn’t improved; it has collapsed.”

Steven Pinker

Better Angels Of Our Nature

[2011], 426.Slide36

The death toll from U.S. abortions . . .

Is about the same size as the combined populations of California and New York, or about 2x’s the number of Texans.

Is about 50x’s more than the total number of U.S. war casualties in U.S. history.

Is roughly 1/6

th

the size of the current population

At 1.36 million yearly average, is currently 4

th in the world behind China (7.93 million), Russia (2.29 million), Vietnam (1.52 million), but about 2x’s as much as the next on the list, Ukraine (635,600). [Source] If it was the population of a country, it would be the 24th largest country in the world—between South Africa and Italy.Slide37

Ten Tips for Discussing Abortion

1.

Remember,“our

battle is not against flesh and blood…” (Eph. 6:12)

That person isn’t your enemy

Keep it positive, w/ encouragement and hope.Slide45

Ten Tips for Discussing Abortion

2.

Address the person over the argument. Care for them.

Use

“we” and “us”

language

Pray for them as you talk.(And before & after you talk).Slide46

Ten Tips for Discussing Abortion

3.Prefer

Questions

Discuss, don’t lecture

People love to talk, and want to be heard.Slide47

Ten Tips for Discussing Abortion

4.

Listen

and Learn.

Don’t answer the question, answer the questioner

You can’t do that till you know who you’re dealing with; that means listening.Slide48

Ten Tips for Discussing Abortion

5. Dignify their values as your make your case.

Pick your terms carefully.

Ex., “Is it ethical to

discriminate

against a defenseless human being?” or “Does abortion trade one

injustice

for another?” Slide49

Ten Tips for Discussing Abortion

6.

Rephrase prochoice claims in terms of

the toll on human life

and/or how it

violates their own values

.

You oppose oppression, so should women be allowed to oppress to the point of killing offspring; Men have no such right? Slide50

Ten Tips for Discussing Abortion

7. Ask them to prove, so that there is no reasonable doubt, that the fetal human does not have any right to life and can be justifiably killed through abortion?

(Burden of Proof Argument)Slide51

Ten Tips for Discussing Abortion

8. Don’t take the

bait

on the

“personhood”

debate

I

t’s the prochoicer’s responsibility to show that disputes over personhood and “baby” are just cause for killing a human child-in-utero. Slide52

Ten Tips for Discussing Abortion

9.

Replace

euphemisms

with

precise terminology

Ex.,” Is the fetus a horse fetus, a pig, or a human?”Ex., Does abortion just terminate a pregnancy—childbirth does that too--or does it terminate a child?Slide53

Ten Tips for Discussing Abortion

10. Draw Attention to the

Scope

of the Problem

Often their logic sounds powerful on small scale, when just one or two tragic cases are in view, but can’t justify 58 million abortions.Slide54

Common Objections to the Prolife PositionSlide55

It’s Her Body, So Her Reproductive Outcomes Should Be Her Choice.

Yes and no. Her body is most effected, and privacy isn’t nothing. But it isn’t everything either. Another body is involved and that’s always limited rights of privacy/autonomy

Her body has four arms, four legs, two heads, etc.?

Her body’s immune system attacks the child as a “foreign object”

Regarding Fetal tissue sales, if it’s “her body” then whose limbs and organs was PP selling?Slide56

2. The Prolife position is misogynistic (oppressive/hateful towards women).

Quite the opposite,

prolifers

want every girl baby in utero protected from oppressors who want them dead.

Abortion liberates horny boys to use and abuse women.Women are mature enough to make “big girl” decisions without the nanny-state sheltering them from all consequences.Radical feminism and progressivism hurt family, security, affluence, and opportunity for women.Conflicting views of “womanhood.” Prolifers believe womanhood is not all about casual sex, but also includes wife, mother, daughter of God, etc. Slide57

3. The Prolife position restricts women’s freedom/intrudes on their right of privacy.

This is a bit of constitutional gymnastics since the right of privacy is implicit, at best, and nowhere grants human beings the right to kill innocent, non-threatening, family members.

Zero-sum view of freedom: As if my choice entails you will never get to make another choice again. That’s a dangerously mistaken view of freedom/liberty.

Quite the contrary, the prolife position is pro-freedom. Freedom does not normally entail denying another human being all future free choices. Responsible sexuality, mature parenting, and strong families empower freedom and opportunity like nothing else.Slide58

4.

Prolifers

are hypocrites for supporting the death penalty.

So what? If I’m a wretched

hypocritic, or a jerk, or an idiot, how does that make it okay to kill our offspring before they get a chance to breath? (Red Herring/Non-Sequitur)It’s justice to issue capital punishment for a capital crime. What capital crime have children-in-utero committed?

There have been 1,414 people killed by the death penalty since 1976. Even if every one of those were wrongful deaths, it hardly compares to the 55,595,255 babies killed in the same time.

http://www.numberofabortions.com/

http://www.christianliferesources.com/article/u-s-abortion-statistics-by-year-1973-current-1042http://www.deathpenaltyinfo.org/number-executions-state-and-region-1976Slide59

5. The Prolife position is unrealistic/It will force women to get back-alley (

coathanger

) abortions.

If a woman wants to kill her baby, we can’t stop her, but that’s no excuse for helping her do it.

Back when birth control was still a novelty, people thought they had a “hall pass” for casual sex. Now people know better.Utopian Fallacy: Our reference point is reality, not utopia. We make policies knowing that none of them will be 100% effective.

Kermit Gosnell: Liberal abortion policy hasn’t fixed that problem.

History has shown that making things illegal does effect behavior, though the reluctant will never submit (Prohibition).Slide60

6.

Prolifers

Don’t Care About the Fetus After It’s Born.

Prove it. I just don’t believe it.

Tell that to the countless adoption agencies, women’s shelters, adoptive parents, job corps, and charitable organizations that target their services to young struggling mothers.Red Herring/Non-Sequitur: Even if prolifers

were all wretched loveless people, how does that make it okay to kill our offspring before they get a chance to breath? Evil is no cure for evil, nor does injustice fix injustice.Slide61

7. What about Rape?

Rape is a horrible crime, but it’s not the child’s fault.

How should civilized society treat those who remind us of painful events?

Abortion doesn’t undo rape.

Abortion adds another trauma to her trauma.Abortion doesn’t subtract one injustice, it adds another.

Abortion accommodates the rapist most of all—making it easier for him to rape again (all his witnesses are silenced since their personal trauma was allowed to determine all the decisions surrounding that rape).Slide62

8. What about Mortally Dangerous Pregnancies?

Then it’s not abortion, as such, it’s self defense.

The ethics weigh differently since there’s finally a value offered on the side of abortion comparable to the human life at stake: it’s another human life.

While abortion isn’t demanded here, it’s ethically defensible (in principle) if for example the child has almost no chance of survival and the mother has a strong chance.

However, one can counter that we should still let God take the life and not us—if God wants to claim both lives, or the mother’s life, He has the prerogative.Slide63

9. What about Fetal Handicap or Deformity?

This is outright eugenics—we’ve tried that before (1920’s) and it didn’t go well. We lost our stomach for eugenics after Hitler applied it in cold calculated fashion in Germany.

This is playing God—and only God has a right to do that since he’s not playing.

Implicitly denies sanctity of life by replacing it with a “quality of life” rubric instead.

If anything, the handicapped and infirm need more love and care, not less.Slide64
