MUTANT MAYHEM

MUTANT MAYHEM

MissionYou are tasked with creating your own genetically mutated players. You will combine 3 animals native to its biome to create a genetically modified organism (GMO) **Get video** Paul Wolfe? You are permitted to decide on which 3 biomes you want to create your creatures.

4. You will provide a complete profile for each GMO part. This includes: Scientific name RelativeLife spanReproductionPredatorPrey 2 AdaptationsInteresting fact5. Finally, you will provide a DRAWING of your mutant and 2 strengths and 2 weaknesses of the mutant.6. By Monday, Sept 29, you will present to the class your mutants!

PresentationPowerPoint or Prezi.Once drawings are completed, teacher will take picture, upload to your Sky folder for use.You will save your presentation on your Sky folder in order to be uploaded on Presentation Day.Provide picture of each animal contributed to mutant on presentation. Your presentation piece will also be your graded work. You do not need extra paperwork.

GradingConduct 5pts – 1 pt dailyPresentation 5pts – includes all requirements, voice level 4 Make-up: the next day you are present at school.PowerPoint 10pts – includes images, genus, 3 traits, and justification for everything!Profile Sheets 5pts (5 points/sheet) – completely and thoroughly filled out with justifications.

Biome: TundraThe arctic tundra lies between the northern tree line and the North Pole. It has a permanently frozen layer of soil, or permafrost. Tundras are lands of low productivity in which trees cannot survive the conditions of extreme cold. The only plants found in tundras are short and tend to hug the ground. Plants in the alpine tundra often have deep pigmentation that shields their inner cells from the intense ultraviolet radiation present at high altitudes. The alpine tundra experiences greater day-night temperature fluctuations and higher wind velocities than the arctic tundra.Arctic tundra has very long winters and brief summers of only about six weeks. There are few permanent animal residents of this harsh environment. Those that do inhabit the tundra are well insulated by fur, feathers, and often a layer of fat beneath the skin. Mammals and birds such as musk oxen, caribou, reindeer, arctic hare, lemming, and ptarmigan can survive on tundra plants. The small mammals support predators such as the arctic fox and snowy owl. Some of these animals have coats that change color with the season and blend into the environment.

Artic FoxScientific Name: Vulpes lagopus Relative: Fennec Fox (Vulpes zerda)Life span: 3-6 yearsReproduction: Sexual, 52 day gestation, littersPredators: Wolves, golden eagle, grizzly bearsPrey: small animal (lemmings, voles, owls), will also scavenge when food is scare (eat larger animal feces)2 Adaptations: extremely good hearing, low surface volume Interesting fact: fur will turn from grey to white and vice versa depending on the season Sources: http://www.defenders.org/arctic-fox/threatshttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arctic_fox http://www.louisdorfman.com/species/arctic_foxes.html

Snowy Owl Scientific Name: Bubo scandiacus Relative: Great Horned Owl ( Bubo virginianus)Life span: average 9.5 yearsReproduction: Sexual, eggs hatch 32-34 days, clutchesPredators: Artic fox, wolves, other predatory birdsPrey: lemmings, small rodents, ptarmigan 2 Adaptations: Large yellow eyes surrounded by disks of stiff feathers, light coloration perfect for camouflage Interesting fact: diurnal, can hunt during day and night Sources: http:// animals.nationalgeographic.com/animals/birds/snowy-owl.html http:// en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Snowy_owl http:// www.owlpages.com/owls.php?genus=Bubo&species=scandiacus

Caribou Scientific Name: Rangifer tarandusRelative: Elk (Alces alces) Life span: 15 yearsReproduction: Sexual, 228 day gestation, produce single calfPredators: Wolves, bears, wolverinesPrey: lichen, leaves of willow and birch2 Adaptations: strong sense of smell, long legs and hollowed hoovesInteresting fact: only large mammal to be able to digest lichen Sources: http://animals.nationalgeographic.com/animals/mammals/caribou/http://animals.pawnation.com/approximate-gestation-period-caribou-5181.htmlhttp://www.learner.org/jnorth/tm/caribou/BuildACaribou.html http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Caribou
