Biography

Born in 1904 and lived until 1990.

Was a writer before he was a psychologist.

Became interested in Behavioral psychology while at Harvard University where he created Skinner’s Box and the cumulative recorder.

After graduating he stayed at Harvard to study his discoveries.

Eventually took job at University of Minnesota where he gained interest in the ongoing war.

Trained pigeons to guide missiles but it never took off

.Slide3

Behaviorism: The view that psychology should be an objective science.

Radical

behaviorism: is distinguished by its intense emphasis on observable behaviors and its inclusion of thoughts, emotions, and other internal mental activity in the analysis and theorizing of human and animal psychology

.School of thoughtSlide4

Operant Behavior

theory:

behavior did not depend on the preceding stimulus, behaviors were dependent upon what happens after the response

.Operant behaviors: actions under our controlAchieved through Operant ConditioningThrough operant conditioning, an association is made between a behavior and a consequence for that behaviorReinforcement: strengthens the behavior it follows.Positive- reward or praise of some sort

Negative- avoidance of something bad or uncomfortablePunishment: decreases or weakens the behavior it follows.Positive- unfavorable outcome such as time-out, spanking, prisonNegative- removal of something good like taking a favorite toy or being grounded

Developmental TheorySlide5

Skinner’s box, an operant conditioning apparatus. The device was a chamber that contained a bar or key that an animal could press in order to receive food, water, or some other form of reinforcement.

Along with Skinner’s Box he also created the

Cumulative Recorder

. A device that recorded responses to tests as a sloped line. By looking at the slope of the line, which indicated the rate of response, Skinner was able to see that response rates depended upon what happened after the animal pressed the bar.

Some of his books include:The Behavior of Organisms: An Experimental Analysis. (1938)Schedules of Reinforcement. (1957)

Verbal Behavior. (1957)The Technology of Teaching. (1968)

Other Ground breaking worksSlide7

He also created a thing called the ‘Baby Tender’. Which was an enclosed heated crib with a

Plexiglas

window in response to his wife's request for a safer alternative to traditional cribs

.Fun Fact!Slide8

What does Skinner’s operant behavior theory state?

States that behavior depends on what happened AFTER the response rather then

before

it.What behavior is being rewarded in the video clip?PeckingQuizSlide9
