Carpenter ants are sonamed because these social insects excavate galleries in wood to create nest sites They use their strong jaws mandibles to remove quantities of wood as they expand the size of their nests Unlike termites carpenter ants do not co Indoors however ants are no picnic They can become a serious nuisance and may cause sanitation problems They may bite or sting and have a nasty habit of walking all over your food without wiping their feet In the Paci64257c Northwest the most common 1 2 They do not eat wood but they remove quantities of it to expand their nesting facilities This can result in damage to buildings and if the main structural beams are hollowed out can result in an unsafe condition Typical damage is shown in Fig 3 By Cody. Brownbill . At first you might think that they are small and not important, but when you start to look at what they do there is so much you can learn from them.. A wise king who lived 3000 years ago said “Look at the ant, watch his ways and be wise”.. Roger E. Gold and Grady J. Glenn* arpenter ants are social insects that live incolonies, primarily in wood. They hollowout wood to build their nests, making theirgalleries and chambers velvety-smooth By: Isaac . Demmers. What is a Carpenter. The definition for carpenter is.. A person who makes and repairs wooden objects and structures.. When being a carpenter your projects can turn out how ever you want them to. You can make them as big as you want or as small as you want.. Picture Card Set CARPENTER ANTS …are large black insects that nest in wood. LADYBUGS eat harmful insects but can be a nuisance when they swarm on buildings and even inside homes. BUTTERFLIES Many people confuse Carpenter . A. nts and Termites. Although both are destructive, they are very different insects. . Both are found with and without wings.. Both are involved with the destruction of wood.. ACTIVITIES CARRIED OUT DURING PROJECT. Ants are able to impact the environments negatively and positively.  Ants control other species that are threats to human health such as bed bugs. (6)  Ants also have the ability to contaminate food and crops. They are able to transmit diseases such as salmonella, staphylococcus, and streptococcus.(2) Our objective is to determine the number of different ant species living in three different regions of Seaford. Our research question was to what extent do the environments that ants are found affect biodiversity. We hypothesized that the area with the greatest access to water would have the greatest diversity of ant species. We collected the ants by disturbing ant hills at Cedar Creek Park and two Seaford neighborhood residences, one very close to the water and the other far from the water. We were able to collect the ants by disturbing their ant hills due to the ants territorial instincts. They come out of their disturbed mounds in order to protect it.(3) After we collected and documented our samples we extracted and isolated the DNA. We then amplified the the CO1 gene by PCR. Amplified DNA was then sequenced and species identified using the bioinformatics program BLAST. Although our sample size at the residences was low we identified three species of ants in Cedar Creek Park and only one at the residences. This does not support our initial hypothesis. .
