Charles “Lucky” Luciano By: David Milcic “If you have a lot of what people want and can't get, then you can supply the demand and shovel in the dough.” “There's no such thing as good money or bad money. There's just money.”

Background Info: Born Salvatore Lucania in Sicily in 1897Has three siblings He came to the United States with his family in 1906 Father was a Sulphur pit worker in Italy and hoped to find a better life for his familyArrested at the age of ten for shop- liftingOne of Luciano's first rackets was getting his schoolmates to pay him for protection. If they didn't cough up the money, he was liable to give them a beating himselfLuciano dropped out of school in 1914

Background Info cont :While he worked as a clerk for a hat company for some time, he managed a budding criminal career as well Luciano got involved in dealing drugs, which led to his first major run-in with the law in 1916 He was caught selling heroin and served six months at a reformatory for the crimeHe felt that his given name of "Salvatore" or "Sal" was a girl's name, so he became known as "Charlie." By 1916 he was a leading member of the Five Points Gang (Italian gang) and a friend of the rising Jewish gang leader Meyer Lansky Gained most of his money and power during the prohibition era

Why “Lucky”? There are a few theories to how he got the nickmane "Lucky.” Most involved escapes from murderous attacks, like one in 1929 that gave him his scarred chin and drooping right eye. The nickname may also be due to his gambling luck, or to a simple mispronunciation of his last name.

Crime Date Victims Punishment Drug Dealing1916 n/a Six months in juvenile correction facility Extortion 1936 Local Businesses and his prostitutes 30-50 years in jail Organizing Prostitution 1936n/a30-50 years in jail -Luciano was also responsible for the murders of rival mobsters as well as illegal alcohol trafficking during prohibition but it couldn’t be “proven” he was involved

Evidence: a reported $22,500 income. (His actual take was about $10 million.) yet he lived a lavish life stylePolice used wiretapsMildred Balitzer testified to the grand jury that Luciano was the head of the bonding combination (prostitution ring). The evidence against the co-defendants (fellow mobsters) was strong enough to convict each on charges of loan sharking, prostitutes, and extortion The co-defendants could be linked to Luciano

Sentence: He was sentenced to 30-50 years in jail at Clinton State Prison Luciano still maintained complete control over the New York waterfront, even from prison, he was in a position to bargain for his freedom. In exchange for getting the dock workers to help the U.S. Navy and ordering the Italian Mafia to work against Benito Mussolini, back in Italy he was released from prison in 1946He was deported to Italy once he was released

Cultural Refrences: Book- Lucky Luciano: The Man Who Organized Crime in America-non-fictionRapper who goes by name Lucky Luciano

Differential Association Theory I believe that Lucky Luciano fits into the differential association theory. This theory states that criminal behavior is learned through interaction and Luciano spent almost all his life with criminals. He was a member and eventually leader of a gang when he was a teenager. As well as at school he spent time with criminals at his job where he would deal drugs. He also served jail time as a youth which further exposed him to criminal people. Luciano moved on from his gang and into the New York Mafia. He became a professional criminal in the mob and eventually rose to the top. Luciano spent almost all of his life dealing with criminals from a young age well into his adult years. Once he ascended to the top of the mob he organized it into “families” and he worked with other criminals in just about everything he did. Once he was convicted he was yet again surrounded by criminals in prison. After he was released from prison and deported to Italy was perhaps the first time in his life since his early childhood he was no longer spending most of his time with criminals.
