Posture

When playing the drums it is very important to sit properly. The correct way is shown in the diagram to the right of this explanation. Your back should be straight, you should be sitting upright. If you are hunched it can seriously damage your back. It may also cause severe pain to sit awkwardly.Slide3

Holding your sticks

If anyone has ever told you that it doesn’t matter how you hold your sticks, they are wrong. The way you hold your sticks is possibly one of the most important things about playing drums. If you hold them wrong you can permanently damage your wrists, you can hit yourself on accident and much, much more. It is almost impossible though, to put the correct way into words and I could not find a picture or diagram anywhere so I would recommend finding a video on how to hold them on the internet.Slide4

Hitting the drum

If you think it doesn’t matter how you hit the drum you would also be wrong. If you hit the rim on accident you could dent the drum if it is metal and you can chip it if its wood. It can also cause extreme damage to your drum sticks, it can make them snap or chip or crack if you use those weird light up plastic ones. When hitting the drum you should always aim for the center of the skin and don

t whack it as hard as you can. Many people have bought a drum kit for the first time and have broken it by hitting the skins too hard. Everyone seems to think that drums are meant to be hit as hard as you can thwack them, but no, no they are not.Slide5

Assembly

If you are ever going to perform it is crucial that the kit is assembled properly, there should be a manual that came with kit. You have to make sure that absolutely everything is securely tightened and cant collapse. If you don

t it is possible that the kit could fall apart whilst you are playing which, when your on stage. You do not want it to do

. Not only could it break your legs in the collapse, it could also kill some poor chap in front of

the stage.
