Slide12*PRAYER OF CONFESSION (unison)
Merciful God, we thank you for sending your Son to announce the coming of your holy and beautiful kingdom.
Slide13Help us to be ready to hear his call, to repent, to turn away from our sins, and to believe his good news. Too often we focus our energies on meeting our own needs,
Slide14satisfying our own cravings. This will not build your kingdom. Forgive us, Merciful God, when we turn in that direction. Turn us in the right direction and set us on a course of discipleship
Slide15and kingdom building. We ask this through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.
Slide16(silence is observed for reflection and prayer)

Slide21PROCLAIMING THE WORD
SCRIPTURE READING:
Jonah 3:1-10
Slide22The word of the Lord came to Jonah a second time, saying, ‘Get up, go to
Ninevah
, that great city, and proclaim to it the message that I tell you.’ So Jonah set out and went to
Ninevah
, according to the word of the Lord. Now
Ninevah
was an exceedingly
large city, a three
days’ walk across.
Slide23Jonah began to go into the city, going a day’s walk. And he cried out, ‘Forty days more, and
Ninevah
shall be overthrown!’ And the people of
Ninevah
believed God; they proclaimed a fast, and everyone,
great and small,
put on sackcloth.
Slide24When the news reached the king of
Ninevah
, he rose from his throne, removed the robe, covered himself with sackcloth, and sat in ashes. Then he had a proclamation made in
Ninevah
: ‘By the decree of the king and his nobles: No human being or animal, no
herd or flock, shall
taste anything.
Slide25They shall not feed, nor shall they drink water. Human beings and animals shall be covered with sackcloth, and they shall cry mightily to God. All shall turn from their evil ways and from the violence that is in their hands. Who knows? God may
relent and change
his mind;
Slide26he may turn from his fierce anger, so that we do not perish.’ When God saw what they did, how they turned from their evil ways, God changed his mind about the calamity that he has said he would bring upon them;
and he did not do it.
Slide27SCRIPTURE READING:
Mark 1:14-20
Slide28Now after John was arrested, Jesus came to Galilee, proclaiming the good news of God, and saying, ‘The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God has come near; repent, and believe in the good news.’ As Jesus passed along the Sea of Galilee, he saw
Simon and his
brother Andrew
Slide29casting a net into the lake – for they were fishermen. And Jesus said to them, ‘Follow me and I will make you fish for people.’ And immediately they left their nets and followed him. As he went a little farther, he saw James son of Zebedee and his
brother John,
Slide30who were in their boat mending the nets. Immediately he called them; and they left their father Zebedee in the boat with the hired men, and followed him.
Slide31L
: This is the Word of the Lord.
P: Thanks be to
God!

Slide33*HYMN #298 “There’s a Wideness in God’s…” v.1
There’s a wideness in God’s mercy,Like the wideness of the sea; There’s a kindness in God’s justice,Which is more than liberty.
Slide34*HYMN #298 “There’s a Wideness in God’s…” v.1
There is no place where earth’s sorrowsAre more felt than up in heaven; There is no place where earth’s failingsHave such kindly judgment given.
Slide35*HYMN #298 “There’s a Wideness in God’s…” v.2
For the love of God is broaderThan the measures of the mind; And the heart of the Eternalis most wonderfully kind.
Slide36*HYMN #298 “There’s a Wideness in God’s…” v.2
If our love were but more faithful,we would gladly trust God’s Word; And our lives reflect thanksgivingFor the goodness of our Lord.
