GEOGLOWS ENGAGEMENT WITH PRIVATE SECTOR

Objective:

To establish the framework for more effective, sustainable and relevant practice and partnerships with the private sector - leverage

private capital, expertise, innovation in EO

Policy Drivers:

Policy Drivers: SDGs

(means of

impl

.); SDG Compass;

OECD and UN guiding principles; United Nations Global Compact: Others: World Bank; UNESCO, ILO, UNIDO, UNDP etc Timeframe: 6 months - Draft in 1st Qtr 2018Partnerships: GEO + GEOGLOWS

Building vibrant and systematic partnerships with the private sector is a vital prerequisite for the successful implementation of a transformative

agenda

.

Potential contribution: finance

, technology, skills, reach and

innovation. Slide4

SDGs

bestow unprecedented power and expectations on the private sector as a development agent. This raises the risk that the private sector will conduct ‘business as usual’, but under the reputational mantle of the SDGs.Unsustainable business practices and impacts if the partnership fails to focus on areas of highest impact

(in its sphere of influence) NOT ONLY on areas most beneficial to their bottom line.

Business models must align business agendas with societal aims. i.e. clear

APPLICATION OF EARTH OBSERVATIONS IN SUPPORT OF A LEGAL FRAMEWORK FOR WATER SUSTAINABILITY (PILOT)

Objective: To develop a methodology for environmental characterization (in this case water resources) using Earth Observations (EO) that can be used to reveal environmental and (social) indigenous vulnerabilities.

Target Beneficiaries: Indigenous communities in Meta suffer

disproportionate limitations on their enjoyment of their economic, social and cultural rights (ESCR).

Methodology

:

Baseline

characterization of the water

resources:

information developed through the project GFOI to establish the change in forest cover (work developed by the

Instituto de Hidrología, Meteorología y Estudios Ambientales de Colombia (IDEAM).Research: Mapping of the legal/policy framework; EO data - mapping of water resources (including ecosystems and wetlands); land-use and human settlements

mapping.

Policy influencing:

Consultations with Policy and decision-makers and beneficiariesSlide6

Contributes to SDGs: 3,6, 10,16,17

Partnerships: Pilot studies - in partnership with the Indigenous Authorities of two reservations in Colombia, located within the municipality of Puerto

Gaitan, Meta, who are the decision makers in this project.

Beneficiaries:

Corozal-Tapaojo

Reservation

Piapoco

and

Saliba

Tribes: A community of 1200 indigenous people of which 700 are women and children. There are only about 3,000 Piapoco speakers left today in the world. Dom Planas ReservationSikuani Tribe (Domo Planas): A community ( Sikuani language ) of 2595 indigenous people. There are only about 19,700 Sikuani

people in the

world.

Project Implementation NGO:

Fundacion

EnvironmentLex

– Colombia (Policy legal review –social/economic aspects) + GEOGLOWS

Cross SBA (Societal Benefit Areas) linkages:

Characterization of the water resources (GEOGLOWS); Evaluation of the conditions of the wetlands ecosystems (GEO Wetlands), baseline for biodiversity evaluation (GEO BON); land use and human settlement mapping (?)

Partnerships and

Cross SBA (Societal Benefit Areas)

linkages Slide8

Achievements until 2017: In fulfilment of its mission, EnvironmentLEX has represented indigenous reservations in legal matters affecting the fundamental rights of the culture, religion, environment, political and economic aspects. Earth observations and legal documents have guided the study and proof in several cases to restore the equilibrium between development and environment.

EnvironmentLEX is a non-governmental organization whose main object is the study of circumstances that compromise the existence of indigenous communities in Colombia, including those related to the environment, with the purpose of advancing legal actions to guarantee the protection of the natural resources.
