Picture - word; simplified from book Preparation Print out the pages, stick them onto coloured paper (so that they cannot be seen through from the back), cut out the cards, and laminate them. Use a different colour for each set so that the sets are easily recognisable and can be sorted after a lesson. Playing the game Give each group of 4 to 6 students a set of cards. Place all cards face down on the table — it’s easier if they are laid out in a grid. Student 1 turns over a card and says the word or names the picture on it, then turns over a second card. If the cards match (e.g. one says cat and the other shows a picture of a cat), the student can keep the cards. Student 2 takes her turn. At the end of the game, the student with the most cards is the winner. Alternative activities 1. To review the vocabulary, give each group a set of cards (picture - word). Groups compete to match the words and pictures in the shortest time. 2. Assessment task: Give pairs a set of picture cards. Students lay the cards out in front of them. Say a word. Students look for and hold up the correct picture as quickly as possible. 3. Grouping activity: Give each student one card. Give the class five minutes to find their partner.
