Philippians 1:12-20Slide4

Mat 26:26

And as they were eating, Jesus took bread, blessed and broke

it,

and gave

it

to the disciples and said,

"Take, eat; this is My body."

Mat 26:27

Then He took the cup, and gave thanks, and gave

it

to them, saying,

"Drink from it, all of you.

Mat 26:28

For this is My blood of the new covenant, which is shed for many for the remission of sins.

Mat 26:29

But I say to you, I will not drink of this fruit of the vine from now on until that day when I drink it new with you in My Father's kingdom."

Jesus became a disappointment to many during his personal ministry.

Jesus became a “disappointment”

t

o

those looking for a political leader. (John 6:15; 18:36).

Joh 6:15 Therefore when Jesus perceived that they were about to come and take Him by force to make Him king, He departed again to the mountain by Himself alone.

Joh 18:36

Jesus answered,

"My kingdom is not of this world. If My kingdom were of this world, My servants would fight, so that I should not be delivered to the Jews; but now My kingdom is not from here."

Slide8

What do Harold Camping, Hal Lindsay, John Wesley, Martin Luther, John Calvin,

David Koresh have

in common?

They

all made failed predictions regarding the nature and timing of Christ’s return.Slide9

Jesus became a “disappointment” To

those looking for a meal ticket. (John 6:26, 66).

Joh 6:26 Jesus answered them and said, "Most assuredly, I say to you, you seek Me, not because you saw the signs, but because you ate of the loaves and were filled.

Joh 6:66

From that

time

many of His disciples went back and walked with Him no more. Slide10

Jesus becomes a disappointment to anyone who seeks Him for the wrong reasons.Slide11

He Disappoints Any Who Look To Him As A Personal Pawn.

John

12:5 "Why was this fragrant oil not sold for three hundred denarii and given to the poor?"

6

This he said, not that he cared for the poor, but because he was a thief, and had the money box; and he used to take what was put in it.

Jas 4:3 You ask and do not receive, because you ask amiss, that you may spend

it

on your pleasures. Slide12

He Disappoints Any Who Look To Him As A Personal Pawn.

To many Christ and church means of their business advancement (2 Pet. 2:3)

2 Peter

2:3 By covetousness they will exploit you with deceptive words; for a long time their judgment has not been idle, and their destruction does not slumber. Slide13

He Disappoints Any Who Look To Him As A Personal Pawn.

To many Christ and church means of their social advancement and enjoyment

.

Expect

constant social

attention.

 View it much like a club or fraternity.Slide14

He Disappoints Any Who Look To Him As A Personal Pawn.

To many Christ and church merely "good insurance".

Do not really want

it.

But

want it near just in case it is needed.Slide15

He Disappoints Any Who Look To Him For Earthly Equity (Luke 12:13-15 Judas and the money box)

Jesus does not promise that we will be treated fairly in this world.

(1

Cor. 6:7,8

).

 He warned us of ill treatment! Matt 5:11-12.

Luk

12:13 Then one from the crowd said to Him, "Teacher, tell my brother to divide the inheritance with me."

14

But He said to him, "Man, who made Me a judge or an arbitrator over you?"

15

And He said to them, "Take heed and beware of covetousness, for one's life does not consist in the abundance of the things he possesses."

1Co 6:7

Now therefore, it is already an utter failure for you that you go to law against one another. Why do you not rather accept wrong? Why do you not rather

let yourselves

be cheated?

8

No, you yourselves do wrong and cheat, and you do these things to your brethren!

Mat 5:11 "Blessed are you when they revile and persecute you, and say all kinds of evil against you falsely for My sake.

Mat 5:12

Rejoice and be exceedingly glad, for great

is

your reward in heaven, for so they persecuted the prophets who were before you.

Slide16

He Disappoints Any Who Look To Him For Earthly Equity (Luke 12:13-15 Judas and the money box)

Jesus does not promise that we will be treated fairly in this world. (1 Cor. 6:7,8).

 He warned us

that we will have poverty always John 12:8

Joh 12:8

For the poor you have with you always, but Me you do not have always."

Slide17

He Disappoints Any Who Look To Him For Earthly Equity (Luke 12:13-15 Judas and the money box)

Jesus teaches us to look deeper and beyond present inequities. (Phil. 1:12-20 Paul's hard circumstances turned out to further the gospel)

Php

1:12 But I want you to know, brethren, that the things

which happened

to me have actually turned out for the furtherance of the gospel,

13

so that it has become evident to the whole palace guard, and to all the rest, that my chains are in Christ;

14

and most of the brethren in the Lord, having become confident by my chains, are much more bold to speak the word without fear.

15

Some indeed preach Christ even from envy and strife, and some also from goodwill:

16

The former preach Christ from selfish ambition, not sincerely, supposing to add affliction to my chains;

17

but the latter out of love, knowing that I am appointed for the defense of the gospel.

18

What then? Only

that in every way, whether in pretense or in truth, Christ is preached; and in this I rejoice, yes, and will rejoice. 19

For I know that this will turn out for my deliverance through your prayer and the supply of the Spirit of Jesus Christ, 20 according to my earnest expectation and hope that in nothing I shall be ashamed, but with all boldness, as always, so now also Christ will be magnified in my body, whether by life or by death. Slide18

He Disappoints Any Who Look To Him For Unrestricted Fellowship. (Matt. 7:13,14).

The Lord's way is not broad enough to embrace all doctrines. (2 John 9;

Rom

. 16:17,18).

Mat 7:13 "Enter by the narrow gate; for wide

is

the gate and broad

is

the way that leads to destruction, and there are many who go in by it.

14

Because narrow

is

the gate and difficult is the way which leads to life, and there are few who find it.

2Jn 1:9

Whoever transgresses and does not abide in the doctrine of Christ does not have God. He who abides in the doctrine of Christ has both the Father and the Son.

17

Now I urge you, brethren, note those who cause divisions and offenses, contrary to the doctrine which you learned, and avoid them

. 18

For those who are such do not serve our Lord Jesus Christ, but their own belly, and by smooth words and flattering speech deceive the hearts of the simple. Slide19

He Disappoints Any Who Look To Him For An Earthly Utopia.

Act 10:34 Then Peter opened

his

mouth and said: "In truth I perceive that God shows no partiality. 35 But in every nation whoever fears Him and works righteousness is accepted by Him.

But the Lord's way is broad enough to embrace all in every nation who obey. (cf. Acts 10:34,35).Slide20

Jesus does not promise to solve all his followers earthly problems. (John 16:33; Acts 14:22).

Joh 16:13 However, when He, the Spirit of truth, has come, He will guide you into all truth; for He will not speak on His own

authority,

but whatever He hears He will speak; and He will tell you things to come.

Act 14:22 strengthening the souls of the disciples, exhorting

them

to continue in the faith, and

saying,

"We must through many tribulations enter the kingdom of God."

He Disappoints Any Who Look To Him For An Earthly Utopia.Slide21

Do not expect a temptation-free life. (1 Cor. 10:13).

1Co 10:13

No temptation has overtaken you except such as is common to man; but God

is

faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able, but with the temptation will also make the way of escape, that you may be able to bear

it.

He Disappoints Any Who Look To Him For An Earthly Utopia.Slide22

Do not expect a problem-free church in this world. (1 Cor. 11:19).

1Co 11:19 For there must also be factions among you, that those who are approved may be recognized among you.

He Disappoints Any Who Look To Him For An Earthly Utopia.Slide23

Do expect persecution for His sake. (Matt. 5:10-12; 2 Tim. 3:12).

Mat 5:10 Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness' sake, For theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

11

"Blessed are you when they revile and persecute you, and say all kinds of evil against you falsely for My sake.

12

Rejoice and be exceedingly glad, for great

is

your reward in heaven, for so they persecuted the prophets who were before you.

He Disappoints Any Who Look To Him For An Earthly Utopia.

2Ti 3:12

Yes, and all who desire to live godly in Christ Jesus will suffer persecution. Slide24

Jesus does promise support during these troubles

.

He did not remove Jesus' death, did send strength. (Heb.

5:7).

Heb

5:7

who, in the days of His flesh, when He had offered up prayers and supplications, with vehement cries and tears to Him who was able to save Him from death, and was heard because of His godly fear,

He Disappoints Any Who Look To Him For An Earthly Utopia.Slide25

Jesus does promise support during these troubles.

He will not remove trouble, but will go with you through it. (Rom. 8:35-39).

Rom 8:35

Who shall separate us from the love of Christ?

Shall

tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword?

36

As it is written: "FOR YOUR SAKE WE ARE KILLED ALL DAY LONG; WE ARE ACCOUNTED AS SHEEP FOR THE SLAUGHTER."

37

Yet in all these things we are more than conquerors through Him who loved us.

38

For I am persuaded that neither death nor life, nor angels nor principalities nor powers, nor things present nor things to come,

39

nor height nor depth, nor any other created thing, shall be able to separate us from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

He Disappoints Any Who Look To Him For An Earthly Utopia.Slide26

Jesus will disappoint you if you try to come to him on your terms.

Jesus will not disappoint you if you unconditionally surrender. (cf.

Lk

. 11:28;

Luke.

22:42,43).

Luk

11:28

But He said,

"More than that, blessed

are

those who hear the word of God and keep it!"

Luk

22:42

saying,

"Father, if it is Your will, take this cup away from Me; nevertheless not My will, but Yours, be done."

43 Then an angel appeared to Him from heaven, strengthening Him. Slide27

Jesus will not disappoint those who trust in what he has promised.

If you obey gospel you will be forgiven as he

promised.

If

you are faithful you will receive crown of life as

promised.

If

you seek first kingdom of God you will receive a living as

promised.

If

you walk in the light you will be cleansed of sin as promised.

-

Note: those walking in light confess their sins. (1 John 1:7,9).

1Jn 1:7

But if we walk in the light as He is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus Christ His Son cleanses us from all sin.

8

If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.

9

If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us

our

sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

10

If we say that we have not sinned, we make Him a liar, and His word is not in us. Slide28
