Content Standa rds - TEKS STAAR will test the conte nt standa rds called the Tex as Essential Knowle dge and Skills (TE KS) .The TEKS ha ve been divided into the following standards:READINESS standards SUPPORT ING standardsProcess Skills have also been identified in Social Studies, Math, and Science.These will be tested with the content standards (Readiness or Supporting).

Readi ness vs. Supporting Standards Rea diness Sta ndards Are essential for su ccess in the current gra de or course Are im portant for prep aredness for the next grade or course Support college and career readinessAddress broad and deep c on cepts, skills, and ideas Supporting StandardsAlthough introduced and/or reinforced in the current grade or course, they may be emphasized in a subsequent year.They play a role i n pre paring students for the next grade or course but not a central role.They address more narrowly defined ideas.

Student Success In itiative Require ments for 2015-16 :G rades 3-8 h ave receive d passing standards (handout) Stat e SSI PROPOS ED requirements are in place for grades 5 & 8 for the 2015-2016 school year.Awaiting from TEA SSI – SS I Ins tructions for specific requirements, however, 3 testing opportunities exist for Grades 5in Reading and MathPromotion decisions based on TEC §28.021(a), "a student may be promoted only on t he basis of academic achievement or demonstrated proficiency of the subject matter of the course or grade level. W h at ca n you do? Com municate re gularly with your child’s t eacher. A sk if there are exer cises that can be done at home to help reinforce wha t your child is learning.Familiarize yourself with the test format and go over samplequestions with your child. http://www.tea.state.tx.us/student.assessment/p a r ents/Emphasize the importance of participating in school daily.

W h at ca n you do? Know the STAAR testing sc hedule a nd avoid ma king appointments on that day. Make sure your child gets adequate rest and eats a healthy br ea kfast on the morning of the test.Encourage your child to do his or her best. Express confidence that he or she will do well.Encour a ge your child to read a variety of all kinds (genres) of text: books of all kinds, magazines, plays, poetry, new sp a p e rs , e t c.

Student Success on S TAAR Overall, studen ts perform ed wel l on the STAAR read ing ite ms, across al l genres and reporting categorie s.The data suggest that students are less fam ili ar with poetry, drama, and persuasive genres.The data also suggest that students are lessproficient at making connections across t e xts.16

Student Su ccess on STAAR Reporting Category 1: Understanding and Analysis Ac ross GenresThe stud ent will demonstrate an a bility to understand and analyz e a variety of writte n texts across reading genres: Vocabulary – Students must learn to use the broader context to determine the meaning of unfamiliar words. Students should understand that the context may come from multiple and/or larger sections of text.

Student Su ccess on STAAR Report ing Cate gory 2: Und erstanding a nd Analysis of Litera ry Texts The student will demonstrate an ability to understand and analyze literary texts:Students must be familiar with the specific language of the student expectations in all literary genres. The specific language of the student expectations is reflected on the ST AAR reading assessments.

Student Su ccess on STAAR Report ing Cate gory 3: Und erstanding a nd Analysis of Informationa l Texts The student will demonstrate an ability to understand and analyze informational texts:Students m ust be familiar with the specific language of the student expectations in the expository and persuasive genres. The specific language of the student expectations is reflected on the STAAR reading assessments.

Student Su ccess on STAAR Student success on STAAR requires that students know and use the language of the EL A/R TEKS in the classroom. The focus of instruction n eeds to be on more than the verbs in the student expectations .Students should a lso routinely compare/contrast genres. Examples: How does drama differ from other literary genres? How do persuasive texts differ from expository texts? How does author’s purpose differ across genres?
