Jesus adopts the patterns of blessing found in the OT and IT writings. So,He uses the forms of blessing which we have seen
These offer a blessing to people, not things
They are related to behaviour which matches with the will of GodThe clearest example is seen in the beginning of the Sermon on the Mount and its parallels (Matt 5:1-12)Jesus in his contextSlide4
NT scholarship sometimes allows itself to get distracted.Study of the Sermon is includedLet’s get rid of two red herrings
Red herringsSlide5
In this form? It’s difficult to say….Did Jesus use the material found within this construct?
Dale Allison, Constructing Jesus
: Memory, Imagination, and History (Grand Rapids: Baker, 2013)Herring 1: DID JESUS GIVE THE SERMON?Slide6
Scholars have argued that the Sermon may be addressed to the disciples alone rather than all ChristiansScholars of comedy note that this negates Monty Python:
Surely the point is that it is preserved for Matthew’s audience….

A series of macarisms works differently from single onesDifferent kinds of
macarism: religious (Ps 1:10), secular, “wise man” and satirical
(“Blessed are the sinners: they saw all their days. And now they have died in prosperity and wealth”….Ethiopic Enoch 103: 5-6)10 for perfection . Even if 5:9-10 are later additions, the original 8 still indicate perfection (Betz) or Christ (?)5:3 rejects materialism, stresses humility and adds an ethical dimension absent from the
macarisms

It is developed in the
macarisms
which follow and outline a practical piety

The Beatitudes set out a way of life by describing attitudes and intentions which are in line with God’s will. Blessings are bestowed on the holy. The enjoin on us a pattern of holiness, not wholeness.
Thus Gerry Hughes:As an illustration of the difference between holy and being holistic, here are thumbnail sketches of two characters. Which of the two do you consider to be the more ‘holistic’?
The first character is a middle-aged man who is gifted, intelligent, intuitive, creative artistic and a music-lover. He is a vegetarian, teetotal and a non-smoker. The second is also a middle aged man who is intelligent and intuitive. But this man is of a melancholic disposition, afflicted with suicidal tendencies and bent with rheumatism? Which of the two is the more holistic?Holiness, not wholenessSlide10

Compassion (Matt 13:14; Luke 15:6-7)Compassion is blocked if we fail to live without regard for others
If God’s compassion embraces all, so must oursModernity has to be confronted with the concept of unconditional acceptance of the unacceptable. Untamed ambition and unbridled competition robs every participant in the race of his/her dignity….Everybody is made unhappy because his/her acceptability depends on his/her outperformance of others, while there will always be those higher up. Better, smarter, more successful than him/herself.
Only if transformation, performance and excellence become consequences rather than prerequisites of acceptance will people be able to do their best in a liberated, relaxed and joyful atmosphere, using their talents to serve and enrich the community, the society and nature, especially those who are less privileged, less gifted and less successful than others.
