Be a part of something bigger than yourselfBe a part of historyBe a part of one of the largest student organizations at Leon High SchoolExperiences you will never forgetYou start High School with a lot of familiar faces Let’s look at some facts 3 Why Should I do Band?

National ResearchFrom the Dana Consortium Report on Arts and CognitionMusicians scored better compared to non-musicians on a test of long-term verbal memory, but this advantage disappeared when the students were prevented from going through the activity of rehearsal. Children with early training in music had a higher degree of phonological awareness (auditory skill correlated with reading ability) than children with no musical training.Intensive music training is associated with improved performance in the core mathematical system for representing abstract geometry. 4

SIX-YEAR SAT SCORE COMPARISONFrom Texas All-State Musicians Compared to National Average2011 – All-State Student = 1819, National Avg. = 15112012 – All-State Student = 1835, National Avg. = 1511 2013 – All-State Student = 1857, National Avg. = 15092014 – All-State Student = 1852, National Avg. = 15092015 – All-State Student = 1825, National Avg. = 15002016 – All-State Student = 1847, National Avg. = 1498 Texas All-State Musicians scored on average 22% higher than the National Average 5

What You Will Learn in Marching BandTeenage America contains the future leaders and movers of tomorrow. Sometimes this age groups is looked at as lazy or un-invested. As a part of the marching band students are often described as: FocusedDrivenConsistentKnowledgeable of Life Lessons Professional Kind ConsiderateUnderstanding7

What Will You Learn in Marching BandEarly is on time; on time is late.Time management is everything.Kindness and generosity go far. Teamwork makes the dream team.Criticism is a natural part of life.Shortcuts get you nowhere. 8

ACADEMICS vs. ELECTIVES You can absolutely do everything you want/need to do AND do Band. I strongly encourage students to take the optional 7th period. This will give you back electives when you are a Senior. I work closely with guidance to ensure that students can accomplish all of the goals they have ALONG with their music classes. 9
