Lipograms
A
piece of writing from which all words containing a particular letter have been deliberately
omitted
.
_______________________
Instead of this: Pay attention! I need to explain this information.
Eliminate the letter “N”:
Give me your ears! I have a crucial message to share. Slide3
“Why would I ever create a lipogram in my own writing? The writing police are not going to arrest me for using a specific letter, right?” Slide4
Well, . . .
When you attempt to find words without a specified letter, your goal is to use words that you may have tucked away in your brain or words you may not normally incorporate in your writing. Think of this is as a fun strategy for finding juicy words to enhance your writing. Slide5
Eliminate the E! Use a Thesaurus!
Sentence:
After
riding on
the
roller
coaster, I lost my voice from screaming.Slide6
How I changed it . . .Slide7
Without an “E”
As soon as that Raging Bull lost its spirit, my throat stung from my shouts of horror!Slide8
Here is another:
I
ate
so much junk food at
the
amusement
park that my stomach
ached
all
the
way
home
. Slide9
What did I do?
Use two
sentences
Changed
it around: car trip first
Ate
: personification
with my stomach
scolding my mouth for
chomping
Junk food:
cotton
candy, popcorn, nachos,
soda
Amusement Park: a carnival visit
Ached:
aching
stomach
Home:
car
trips
Slide10
No “E”
As with all car trips following a carnival visit, today is similar. My aching stomach scolds my mouth, “On no account will I allow you to chomp cotton candy, popcorn, nachos and soda again!”Slide11
IMPORTANT!
You do not have to use the thesaurus for every word. That is unrealistic.
Think hard and creatively.
How could you move the sentence around? What other ways can you say it? Slide12
Your Turn
Grab a partner of the opposite sex or work alone.
C
hoose one of your
journals from today
or combine your ideas.
Write the
entry without an E.
Use the laptops and share this with me.
Use the online thesauruses on my website.
Good Luck!
