Today the US has @ 1.8 million people behind bars (more than any other country). 100,000 in federal custody. 1.1 million in state custody. 600,000 in local jails. Prison/Incarceration is a very polarizing issue. It is also a very political issue. Conservative rhetoric- more jails, more sentences, throw people in jail.
