Is “Revival” mentioned in the Bible? Closest word in the Bible is “revive” or “reviving” Hebrew chayah: to live or make alive, quicken, recover, repair, restore, or be whole It is translated -- KEEP ALIVE, PRESERVE, SAVE, RESTORE, MAKE WHOLE, RECOVER, REPAIR, and to QUICKENHabakkuk 3:2 " Oh Lord, revive thy work; in the midst of the years remember mercy"

Is “Revive” found in New Testament? Greek equivalent for the Old Testament word for “revive” --found in 5 places Why? New Testament Christianity revived Christianity Greek word: anazao 1,2. Prodigal son - Luke 15:24-32 3. Resurrection of Christ - Romans 14:9 4. Physical resurrection of the dead in the last days - Revelation 20:5 5. Deadly effect of sin - Romans 7:9 - evil as well as righteousness can have a revival; there can be an unholy uprising as well as a holy outpouring

“Revive” in New Testament Also see anazapureo - to fan into a flame or to revive - used in 2 Timothy 1:6 - "stir up the gift of God which is in thee" Lexically: 1828 Webster's dictionary - the word revive: "Return, recall or recovery to life from death or apparent death; the revival of a drowned person" – Revival brings to life something was once living that is dead or seems dead  (2) "Return or recall to activity from a state of languor, as revival of spirits" – Revival brings a holy shock to apathy and carelessness – (Isaiah 64:13; 63:10-15)

“Revive” in New Testament (3) "Return or recovery from a state of neglect, oblivion, obscurity or depression." Revival restores truth, recalls obedience over what was forgotten. associated with reformation of doctrine (4) "Renewed active attention to religion; an awakening of men to spiritual concerns."

Revival! Charles Finney on Revival: “Its nothing more or less than a new beginning of obedience to the Word of God." Revival is not mystical – its a heartfelt return to love and faith in the living written Word Dr. Wilbur Smith, Revival historian, says nine outstanding characteristics happen with a major Bible revivals/Awakening:

Nine characteristics of major Bible revivals: They occur in a day of deep moral darkness and national depression  One “BE THE ONE” servant of God --used of God-- leads the nation back to faith and obedience to Him. Word of God --Revival’s foundation. Most follow preaching and proclaiming God’s Word with power.  All result in a return to worshipping the Lord.

Characteristics of major Bible revivals (cont’d) 5. Each Revival witnesses the destruction of idols  6. In each Revival there is a recorded separation from sin7. Each Revival they return to value of a blood sacrifice 8. Almost all recorded Revivals show great joy and gladness 9.  Each Revival is followed by a period of great national prosperity

What does Revival do? Mary Stewart Reife :“Revival is a move of God’s Holy Spirit which changes the moral climate of a nation(s); sweeps multitudes into the kingdom in a brief period of time; produces phenomenal church growth; creates a powerful thrust towards godly activity – including an intense sympathy for the poor and a spirit of self-sacrifice as opposed to self-indulgence. It is always accompanied by a commensurate decrease in crime, drunkenness, jail and prison population, occultic activity, illegitimate births; closures of indecent houses of entertainment, and moves continues to influence society for about a generation.”

What happens with Revival? Arthur Wallis - "Revival is necessary to counteract spiritual decline and to create spiritual momentum ; .. .in revival the church dormant becomes the church militant.“ Charles Finney -“Revival is the infusion of the Spirit into a body which threaten to become a corpse… you can’t revive something that didn’t once have life.”Vance Havner defined revival as "a work of God's Spirit among his own people.. what we call revival is simply New Testament Christianity, the saints getting back to normal.“ Expect outpourings of the Holy Spirit! Many times in a Revival, preaching has to cease because the hearers are prostrate or because the voice of the preacher is drowned by cries of mercy.

Find Revivals --Find Miracles   Historian Joe Martin interviewed a descendant of the Welsh Revival: he was told there were many miracles that took place during that Revival –about half as many as were saved. David Brainerd Assassination Averted—Snake MiracleDavid Brainerd quote: (1745) “The power of God seemed to descend on the assembly like a rushing mighty wind and with an astonishing energy bore all down before it. I stood amazed at the influence that seized the audience almost universally and could compare it to nothing more aptly than the irresistible force of a mighty torrent... Almost all persons of all ages were bowed down with concern together and scarce one was able to withstand the shock of the astonishing operation."  Brian Edwards: " Someone has described Revival as the top blowing off --and that is very true. But the top does not blow off before the bottom has fallen out."

Kiowa Rainy Mountain Revival Miracle The “bad guy”: Documented by the Kiowa, the US Army and historians on religious practices of the Native American tribes, Tone-a-coy killed six Kiowa through word, occult practices and drugs. First Kiowa pastor Lucius Aitsan of the Saddle Mountain Kiowa band knew translating for missionary Isabel Crawford --was at the risk of his own life. Rainy Mountain missionary translator told how her brother (US Army translator) was the last person killed by Tone-a-coy.  New converts didn’t initially understand the protection the blood of Jesus gives us. When Tone-a-coy issued his challenge, the whole tribe showed up to watch new convert Sanko die.

Kiowa Showdown https://vimeo.com/318681751/8188949726

After the Rainy Mountain showdown Lucius Aitsan confronted his Saddle Mountain Kiowa “bad medicine” enemies next. After Rainy Mountain's showdown, his Kiowa band determinedly ousted their bad medicine and became Christian. Aitsan was the 1st Kiowa pastor, 1st Kiowa missionary and his tribe was the first to send missionaries and support orphanages. Aitsan went to the tribes they once scalped and killed. A Hopi man fingering a knife commented Aitsan had “hair”. The missionaries reports said Aitsan told the man—that he came to give of God’s love. The man was an early convert--

What does Revival look like -Quotes Charles Spurgeon: “Revival is a season of glorious disorder, a sweep of wind which sets the seas in motion, that makes our iron clad brethren, now lying at anchor, to roll from stem to stern. It is the fire from heaven so intense it melts the most stolid hearts, and this fire falls first on the saint, and then on the sinner” J. Edwin Orr: “A movement of the Holy Spirit bringing about a revival of New Testament Christianity in the Church of Christ" "the awakening of the masses and the movement on uninstructed peoples towards the Christian Faith; the revived church by many or few is moved to engage in evangelism, teaching and social action."  A.W. Tozer: Revival "changes the moral climate of a community"  Duncan Campbell: Revival makes a “community saturated with God."

Is Revival easy to do-- Quotes James Burn in 1909 "to the church, a revival means humiliation. It is not the easy and glorious thing many think it to be, who imagine it fills pews and reinstates church in power and authority. It comes to scorch before it heals; it comes to condemn ministers and people for their unfaithful witness, for their selfish living, for their neglect of the cross, and to call them to daily renunciation, to an evangelical poverty and to deep and daily consecration. That is why a revival has ever been unpopular with large numbers within the church. Because it says nothing to them of power as they have learned to love, or of ease, or of success; it accuses them of sin, it tells them they are dead, it calls them awake, to renounce the world and follow Christ." Andrew Murray: "A true revival means nothing less than a revolution, casting out the spirit of worldliness and selfishness, and making God and His love triumph in the heart and life.“

What can we expect in Revival-Quotes? J. I. Packer: "Christians in revival are accordingly found living in God's presence (Coram Deo), attending to His Word, feeling acute concern about sin and righteousness, rejoicing in the assurance of Christ's love and their own salvation, spontaneously constant in worship, and tirelessly active in witness and service, fueling these activities by praise and prayer.“ Os Guinness: The story of Christian reformation, revival, and renaissance underscores that the darkest hour is often just before the dawn, so we should always be people of hope and prayer, not gloom and defeatism. God the Holy Spirit can turn the situation around in five minutes.

Revival Transformation, Mighty Power Quotes Mary Stewart Reife: “Revival is always accompanied by a sudden demonstration of God’s irresistible power. Nation shaking and history making, this mighty “righteous revolution” transforms the character of a nation  practically overnight” Duncan Campbell: "God takes the field. He does a thorough work, but in this connection we do well to remember that it takes the supernatural to burst the bands of the natural.

Bible Revivals The Reviver Bringing the Jews from Egypt A. God can Revive –God appointed deliverer B. God wants to Revive –Light breaking through the darkness. His heart shows in His power and miracles C. God will Revive-Acts 3:19 "Repent, and turn again, that your sins be blotted out, that so there may come seasons of refreshing from the presence of the Lord."

Bible Revivals The Revived Bringing the Jews from Egypt A. They were a backslidden people - Each backslider who returns will help to bring a blessing B. They were a poor and an oppressed people. While under the lash of whips and no day of rest, still Moses preached to them –where they were. He didn’t expect them to improve things, first. Any true revival must start in the heart of a person. A revival of spiritual life is the quickest way to improve social conditions.

Bible Revivals The Revivalists Bringing the Jews from Egypt Moses and Aaron gathered the people. Gathering to hear the Word of God, unity is very important in revival. In Acts they were all in one accord in one place and prayed.  All revivals have been accompanied by preaching the Word of God. New converts need instruction. In Acts the Spirit of God fell and then Peter preached the Word which brought greater revival and souls saved.  They did signs - Signs and wonders fell among Egypt. Acts has many signs and wonders. Greater unity in the church? Greater signs followed.

Revival Cycles Stage 1: SPIRITUAL REVIVAL Stage 2: BACKSLIDING Stage 3: SPIRITUAL VALLEY Stage 4:  SPIRITUAL AWARENESS   Stage 5:  SPIRITUAL AWAKENING

FIVE STEPS OF THE REVIVAL CYCLE  STEP #1  - Backsliding or Spiritual Decline Serve God by works or law Too busy to pray. Strife. Control. Sin. Legalism. Decline of the Charismata; INSTITUTIONALISM INCREASING STEP #2 Spiritual Valley No praying or Charismata or Power or Presence of GOD; rampant sinning. No relationship with God; religion or institutional Christianity rules. Complete turning away from God. If it feels right, do it. Who’s your god? Pick your idol(s). Oppression shows up

FIVE STEPS OF THE REVIVAL CYCLE STEP #3 Spiritual Awareness  Realizing I’m in a BACKSLIDDEN STATE Realizing what was once had been a meaningful relationship with God was lost. A revival of hunger awakens for what you don’t have. STEP #4 Spiritual Awakening An earnest return to God A strong move of repentance   House cleaning time! Dump the idols Stepping out of comfort zone to target relationship with God A strong move of prayer and confessions of sin A  time of rethinking or renewing

Not in the Comfort Zone! Imagine the Apostle Paul going down the street of Athens thinking – how do get people to listen to me? (Unknown God- Acts 17:33) Aimee Semple McPherson is in Canada asking the Lord that question– She grabs a stool, stands on it in the middle of the street and shouts out “There is something exciting you have to hear! Come, follow me!” They did!

FIVE STEPS OF THE REVIVAL CYCLE STEP #5 REVIVAL -  Outpouring of God’s Love Strong spirit of prayer, and evangelism Return of community (KOINONIA) Full flow of Charismata Restoration of apostolic church aka organic church Return to servant leadership Living with NO LIMITS. Living ENTIRELY out of your Comfort Zon e --WALKING ON WATER--Doing things that never have been done before. Saying new things, going new places

Prescription for Revival As that video said – Life begins at the end of your Comfort Zone. 1745 Mary Bethune --Hebrides goat herder-- walked 130 miles asking “Is God in this town? Can I find Him?” The lady who said “yes” to her got a prayer warrior that prayed in the Hebrides Revival of 1812. Mary Bethune recruited what would be her best friend and prayer warrior Jane McCleod and the two joyously prayed Revivals into being.

Out of His Comfort Zone Malcolm MacCrithie on Hebrides heard there was a Gaelic New Testament Bible 31 miles away. He goes there --its five shillings. He doesn’t have that. Comes back. finds a cask that fell off a ship and came up on the sands. Customs paid him 5 shillings. He goes back 31 miles, gets his Bible and comes home. After he reads it and accepts Christ, he births 3 churches.

Prescription for Revival—what do we need? HumilityPrayerSeek GodRepentance

Prescription for Revival- Humility Humility –is the opposite of pride (Proverbs 6:17 and Mark 7:21-23) Genuine humility is abandonment to self and complete yield to Christ. It is total submission to the will of God -1 Peter 5:5-6 When God told Moses to go lead the people out of Egypt - Moses told God that he could not talk - but God was not interested in Moses selling himself to the people. His job was to tell the people of Israel who God was.

Humility continues Our job hasn’t changed. Moses was to lose “Moses” in the equation --to show God working through him. Saul of Tarsus became lost in God and he became Paul the Apostle - Philippians 3:7-8Many evangelists know this personally. Benny Hinn. Kathryn Kuhlman.

Total Surrender: Kathryn Kuhlman, Benny Hinn https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7n6fPAuh9go

Prescription for Revival - Prayer Prayer is communion with God – It is essential to a healthy spiritual condition. Luke 18:1 & I Thessalonians 5:17 & I Timothy 2:8Genuine, compassionate, earnest prayer will bring revival to cold indifferent saints. It will result in the salvation of sinners. Where people pray and intercede- lives are changed.

War Room Prayer changes things 110 years of Hebrides Revival followed family altars --praying grandmas who taught prayer-People not praying has resulted in empty altars, barren services, fruitless preaching, dead lifeless churches. PRAY. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_WpfkFyG5qQ

Prescription for Revival –Seek God Seek the Lord. Backslidden people spend their energy trying to get the things of this world John said: "all that is in the world…is not of my Father. The world passeth away but he that doeth the will of God abideth forever." When revival comes, people forsake their own selfish, ambitious way and turn to God's way. Matthew 6:33 - seek the kingdom first! What is His will - it is the Word of God. Follow Christ. What would Jesus do?

“What would Jesus do?” Isabel Crawford, missionary to the Kiowa hung this question --where she would daily see it. It wasn’t easy to leave her Dad’s church where the people loved her. For this deaf girl doing what Jesus would do meant going to America, to the KiowaShe would have to help the Kiowa find their way through a scary, changing world. Loving them. Repairing plows, setting up businesses the people could do Teaching seedtime and harvest so they could build their church debt free. Teaching how to fulfill the Great Commission taking the love of God --to their former enemies.

Prescription for Revival- Repentance Repentance is not saying “I’m sorry”. Its changing directions entirely -- turning from wicked ways Wickedness is responsible for the sad, sick, spiritual condition of God's people. Restoration to health depends upon a genuine forsaking of sins.Sins may not be what we would call - visible sins such as drinking, cussing, lying, drugs, even pornography and sex. Sin is coming short and missing the mark. What has God said to you to NOT DO? What has God said to you TO DO?

Repentance and Grace Isaiah 55:7 He will abundantly pardon Proverbs 28:13 He shall have mercy I John 1:9 He cleanses us from all unrighteousness I John 1:7 purifies us (NIV) He cleanseth us KJV In all these verses - we must do something first – Repentance ie forsaking the sin –getting real-- The Cure — "then I will hear from heaven and will forgive their sins and will heal their land" II Chronicles 7:14

Breaking the back of a sin Kenneth Copeland felt he should stop smoking He prayed --Romans 5:20b where sin abounded, grace did much more abound:21 That as sin hath reigned unto death, even so might grace reign through righteousness unto eternal life by Jesus Christ our Lord. What “has you” Satan intends to use to destroy you God gives you the Word that will let you win over what Satan intends to use to hurt you.
