Tana Lee squealed delightedly as she entered the courtyard, her eyes dancing merrily as her companion reached up to cover her own ears with a noticeable wince. The little blonde danced excitedly from foot to foot, before taking off in the direction of a wolf boy that she had spotted. Within seconds, the tiny woman had jumped on the boy and was cooing excitedly as she ruffed his ears. “ Ooooh, who ’ s a cuuute w iddle puppy dog? Yes you are, ” She cooed, while the darker girl looked on with a mix of trepidation, annoyance and pure bewilderment on her face. The dog person thing looked somewhat torn between bolting for the hills and cuddling up with the overly affe ctionate little blonde girl who had chosen this morning to accost him. Then she scratched that right spot just behind his ears, and all sense of self seemed to be lost - his tail wagged excitedly as he leaned into the scratching, and he huffed a little in t hat sort of doggy - ish style. “ The fuck is wrong with you? ” the darker girl finally managed to spit out increduosly, eyes focused warily on the dog person as she spoke to her companion. “ But Trixiiiiiiiiiiiiii - isn ’ t he just the most adorablest cutes t cutesy woo t sey precious widdle puppy doggy? ” She pulled the boy into a fierce hug, squishing his face against her chest as she did so, rocking back and forth. “ Looks to me like he ’ s more person than dog for one - and f or another, why don ’ t you actually focus on this fucking competition? He - “ Trixisha jabbed her thumb in the dog person ’ s direction rather violently, “ - is probably one of your competitors. How do you know he ’ s not just trying to get your defen ces down to take you out in one swift stroke? ” “ But he ’ s sooooo cuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuute! ” Tana grinned cheekily up at her friend, before nuzzling the puppy person adorably. “ Besides, he has a name you know, don ’ t you buddy? ” She asked, pulling back a little bit to grin at him “ Mines Tana Lee Evans , and this grumpy old sour puss of a spoil sport is Trixisha - but I just call her Trixi, and you can too. She ’ s really not nearly as nasty as she seems, and I think she needs to w ear a little more colour, but she ’ s pretty and she listens to me when I talk to her, which most people don ’ t and anyway, what ’ s your name Mr. Puppy - person sir? ” She pulled back to leave the dog - man at arm’s length for a moment to give the dog perso n some breathing space. The boy ’ s eyes widened - maybe he had never heard anyone talk so much or so fast before? - and he reached for something in his belt. He pulled out a pad and a pen, and quickly wrote on it . My name is Faolan, thank you for the ear scratches. Trixisha ’ s hands flew to her ears again as Tana let out yet another delighted shriek - which soon turned into a whimper of sympathy. “ Ooooooh... You can ’ t talk? Y ou poor poor thing! ” Her lower lip jutted out in a pout as she hugged the boy close again. She gave Trixi a look so pitiful that the small, dark haired woman threw her hands up in defeat and stalked off in disgust. Tana stuck her tongue out at her friends retreating back and turned back to Faolan, smiling brightly . “ So Faol an, are you here for the competition? And is Isaac not the cutest dream boat ever? Did you know the princesses are trying to set him up with people? Have you been following their Flitter feed? ” Faolan ’ s eyes widened with each new question as he scrambled to write out his responses as quick as possible. Yes, I ’ m here to compete. What do you mean by “ dream boat ” ? Is Mr. Isaac not a person? How can he be a boat? And why are the princesses trying to set him up? Isn ’ t that awful? What ’ s a fl itterfeed? Tana tilted her head to the side, confused at most of his responses. “ Uhh... Dream boat means he ’ s uh... really cute? Like... uh... attractive and stuff. Really attractive. Not that he isn ’ t a person or anything. And the princesses are tr ying to get him a date, how can that be a bad thing? And how do you not know about Flitter? EVERYONE knows about Flitter. It ’ s the status update thing where people post their thoughts about what they ’ re doing or watching at - this - very - moment kinda dealy t hing. ” Faolan nodded, and Tana smiled. Good, he understood what she meant. She grinned. “ I think he ’ s adorable, but he does need to lighten up just a touch. I don ’ t think I ’ ve seen him laugh or smile since I arrived here. ” She pouted slightly, bef ore flopping back onto the grass giggling. “ And there are just sooooo many people here! And everyone is all like, so serious and stuffy. Well, except Princess Kismet. I met her, and she ’ s super nice and happy, so I can only assume that Princess Zandria is super nice and epic happy too. ” Tana L e e grinned, rolling onto her stomach and looking up at Faolan cutely. “ This country is super lucky to have such happy, carefree people runnin g it. ” Faolan nodded emphatically at her, having grinned and nodded even faster when she had mentioned Kismet. She in turn widened her bright smile in response. “ You and I are going to be great friends Faolan. Though this you no talking thing might dr ive me a little bonkers once in a while. ” The look she received in response made her smile, it was almost as though Faolan was telling her she was quite insane already, thank you very much. She stuck her tongue out at him, wagging the hot pink gl ittering bead at him. There were a couple of loud thumps behind them, and soon Tana ’ s giggles turned to screams, as two men rushed them as she turned to see what the noise was. These men were way bigger that she was, and they had weapons, and she was sca red. She scrambled to her feet, and tried to get away from them as fast as she could. She kept tripping, and ended up back on the grass within moments. She looked back at her would - be - attackers, and her jaw dropped. Alright, so she may have panicked early - they were definitely there to attack one of them, but it had been Faolan, and not her. Her eyes widened in panic as she watched her new friend squ are off against the two men in front of him. “ Ohmygodohmygodohmygod! I need to go get help, needtogogethelp . ” H er lower lip quivered, as she looked around frantically. It was the middle of the courtyard in broad daylight, they were attacking in the middle of a usually crowded and full place in the middle of the day and WHERE WAS EVERYONE? Her eyes darted back to the attackers, and they widened further. Those were... Those people were wearing Isaac ’ s band! They were hi s men? What was going on? Ho w was she supposed to get help if the people attacking them were the help? Could she find any of them other competitors? Would any of them be willing to actually help a fellow competitor out? There was s inking feeling in the pit of the girls stomach, and she knew, just knew that most of them thought like Trixi, and most wouldn ’ t help them out. What was she supposed to do? “ I can ’ t just leave my friend like this. ” She whimp ered, as she watched F aolan take a swipe at the closest attacker. It almost looked like a knife swipe the way he had his hand, but the guy he was fighting against had an actual knife, and that would hurt a whole lot more. Tana bit her lip as tears welled up in her eyes. She just felt so completely useless , and she didn ’ t want to believe that Isaac would do such a horrible thing like sending his men out to harm a ny of the contestants. “ Why don ’ t you just leave, little half man? Sir Locke doesn ’ t even like non - humans. ” One of the men jeered, this one carrying what looked like a big metal, flat baseball bat. The one with the knife circled around b ehind Faolan, as the men tried to flank the boy. “ You ’ ll never make it to the end of this competition. So give up, and go home with your tail between your legs like the chastised little puppy you are. ” When his companion was in position behind the wo lf boy, the man with the bat swung, hard, at Faolan, while his partner jumped forward and stabbed down. “ NO! ” Tana ’ s breath caught in her throat as she looked around frantically again. She needed to find some way to help Faolan. She couldn ’ t see anyt hing nearby that would suit to use as a weapon - not that she ’ d be of any use with one anyway, but it would help - and had almost given up hope in that regards until she felt the weight on her hip shift slightly. Her laptop. It was hard. Heaviesh. But it c ould get damaged. But it would be worth it. She didn ’ t want Faolan to die right? And she could always build herself a new one. It would just take time, and money. And it would not necessarily get broken right? So, it was a risk worth taking to make sure that the wolf man wouldn ’ t be dead, right? She heard a pained yelp as she was debating with herself, and her eyes widened in fright. Was she too late? She saw Faolan go down, holding his leg and snarling. No, not too late, but it would be soon if someone didn ’ t step in. And there really was no one else around, so that left it up to her. Clutching her laptop bag, she ran forward, and swung the bag at the head of the man with the knife as she got closer. She closed her eyes tight, and heard the loud “ Thud! ” , then heard the sounds of something h itting the ground. Cracking one of her eyes open, she looked at where the man with the knife had once stood, and then looked to the crumpled heap on the ground. Then shrieked a little when it moaned, and rolled over. Then danced a little as it stayed dow n. Finally, she let out a sigh of relief as she realized he w ouldn ’ t be getting up any time in the super near future. All the while, Faolan, injured, was still fighting the man with the flat metal baseball bat. There was an ominous gr owl, and Tana turned around just in time to see a large wolf go for the man ’ s throat. The attacker wen t down, and Tana realised he was likely never getting up again. Her eyes darted to the wolf , afraid that it was going to turn on her and attack her next, when she noticed that it was bleeding heavily from a wound to it s leg. It took a moment, before it clicked in her head. Faolan had taken a knife wound to his leg, and this wolf was the same colouring as the fur that the wolf boy was showing, so it was Faolan right? Tana Lee fell to the ground on her knees and started crying, burying her face in her hands, before reaching for Fao lan and burying her face in his fur. “ Fuckin ’ hell. I ’ m gone for what? Five, ten minutes, and I come back to you finding pets, and a horrible bloody mess to clean – “ Tana wailed, looking up at Trixi and scrambling forward to clutch at her friends clothing. “ Trixi, Faolan ’ s HURT and I didn ’ t know what to do, and we need to get him to a doctor or something! Or a vet. He ’ s a wolf, so a vet would be appropriate right? ” “ Wo aahh. Slow down there, the wolf is the wolf boy from ea rlier? And you want to - Oh ne vermind, of course you want to. ” The girls purple eyes focused on the wolf, and she groaned inwardly. She was going to have to carry this beast off to see some kind of specialist wasn ’ t she? “ Alright, fine. ” Tana ’ s big brown eyes widened and her lower lip quivered as she flung her arms around T r ixi in an emphatic hug. “ ThankyouThankyouThankyouThankyou! ” She exclaimed, as the other girl tried to peel Tana off of her. “ If you want me to fucking help you, let. Me. GO. ” Trixisha snapped, finally managing to escape from the little blonde ’ s grasp. She moved forward towards Faolan, and knelt in front of the wolf. “ Alright kid, dog, thing, whatever the fuck you are. I ’ m going to pick you up now. And if you fucking bite me, I ’ m going to end your misery right here and now, whether little miss Tana likes it or not. Do you understand me? ” Faolan dropped his head to his paws, looking up at her with big puppy eyes and whined pitifully. Trixisha gave him a stern look as Tana watched on, tears still streaming down her face . T h e darker girl crouched, then heaved, lifting the big wolf up over her shoulders, and bracing herself as she stood. They must have looked quite the trio as they walked to the palace, one small woman carrying a wolf that probably weighed almost as muc h as she did, and another hugging a laptop bag close to her chest as she cried. T ears streaming down her face.
