The battle of Kings Mountain was instigated when Major Ferguson of the British Army
was commanded to head to the Carolina's and seek out and kill any
rebelsSlide3
Ferguson’s mission went smoothly until he issued a threatening statementHe said that the “
Overmountain
” people who didn’t join the loyalists would be killed and their things would be burnedThese “Overmountain people” he referred to were a small militia called the
Overmountain
MenSlide4
The Overmountain Men were actually a militia formed by local farmers and countrymen living in the Carolina’s
Without their help the Patriots would have had no chance in the battle of
KMSlide5
Ferguson was tracked by the rebel forces until they met him at Kings MountainIncluding the
Overmountain
Men the rebel’s had a force of around 1500 menRebel Soldiers began to climb the mountain, taking loyalists out on their way upSlide6
Out of those 1500 rebels, three were ancestors of mine
Daniel, Abram, and Captain Henry Whitener
Two of these men would end up dead by the end of the battleSlide7
By the time the battle was over there were 225 dead loyalists, 163 wounded, and 716 taken as prisonerThis number included the death of loyalist Major Ferguson
Daniel Whitener is said to have shot one of the eight bullets that killed him during the battleSlide8
The rebels only lost 28 of their own, and 62 were woundedOf those 28, Daniel and Abram Whitener were included
Captain Henry Whitener is my only ancestor to survive the Revolutionary warSlide9
This battle was not only significant in my family historyIt gave Patriot forces hope, considering such a small untrained group of their own could take out such a huge part of the British armySlide10
I’ve visited the Kings Mountain Battlegrounds a few times and it’s pretty interesting It has monuments at key sites of the battle and reenactments are also performed thereSlide11
Overall this project helped me learn a lot about where my family came from and what we’ve done in the pastUntil now I thought we had no historical significance but this really helped open my mind
If nothing else this project has at least given me a pretty cool story to tell
